Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Carniolan Honey

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Carniolan Honey Demonstrator is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Odd color, but still a nice pen for the price I swap out the Ahab flex nib for a Bulow M, mostly because the Ahab nib is a less-consistent starter and seems to spit more ink into the cap than the Bulow M. But that's the only drawback to this pen. Using the replacement nib and keeping the flex nib handy, I can have the best of both worlds... a consistent-starter that writes wetter to shade better and feels less-scratchy... but also a flex nib on the odd occasion I want to do something fancy, flourish-wise. I don't buy Ahabs necessarily for their flex capability. I buy them because they are: 1) a nice size for my hand; 2) hold a LOT of ink; 3) inexpensive and 4) allow for more-expressive writing than a Platinum Preppy. This is my 7th Ahab and it is just as pleasurable to write with as the others. :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Surprised me I bought the Ahab with both eyes open, knowing it might need some tweaking before it can be trusted for regular use and I had to cut / widen the channels a bit to solve the stop/start and ink starvation problems. Now that the mods are done, it is a wonderful writer, generous ink flow, great ink capacity and love the line variations with the flex tip. Great pen for the money, if you don't mind fiddling with it a bit. The Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku to me is just about perfect for this pen. Much Thanks to Goulet for the superb service, will be back for more!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not so great color I own 3 Ahabs, and this one is my least favorite color. The Carniolan Honey Demonstrator seems to have a few small black specks within the plastic material, almost like finely ground black pepper, 15 pieces or so throughout the pen. Its also more "mottled" and cloudy than my other 2 demonstrators. Fortunately, Noodler's has MANY other colors to choose from, and I love ordering from Goulet Pen Company, so worst case scenario is I'll give this pen away to someone that's interested in learning more about the hobby.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from noodler's ahab this is the third Ahab in the pen case, and while the ink might not have flowed as smoothly right out of the box as one might like, the instruction sheet that came with it was quite clear on how to remedy the problem. this is one of those pens to keep your eye on, because someone is going to pick it up and try to walk off with it - it's a very interesting pen. but be warned, if you try to walk off with mine, I will hunt you down and get it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Nib Piston Fill Fountain Pen - The Noodler's Ahab has become a classic piece. A massive pen, that you can take apart entirely, use other manufacturer's nibs on it, play around with the feed adjusting the flow at your liking, and with a filling mechanism that is one of my favourites. The retractable piston fills the pen very easily and also cleans it in seconds even without taking the pen apart. The only thing that many people may find uncomfortable, is...the smell! Since it is made of a special material (I think that it is a kind of resin made from some kind of vegetable), it has a particular smell that some might even find offensive. I don't mind, but some might. If you use it with its flex nib (I guess that's why you get it in the first place) I recommend using an anti-feathering ink, since the ink flow is generous. I have four of them, all bought from Goulet's because of the excellent, fast and quality service I've always enjoyed. These guys really like fountain pens :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab I am left handed and therefore did not expect the full flex pen experience. The Ahab feels good in my hand and can be used like a regular pen. I have found that with some practice I can get some flex effect writing left handed. A flex pen is a nice option to have. This pen is a bargain at its price point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ahab pen with flex nib This is my second unit and I like the efficiency of the filling system. With just two push-pull motion and the reservoir is filled. I prefer to use the supplied converter, rather than removing it and converting the pen to a filler tube. I like to change inks and pens regularly, so just a modest amount of ink allows me to switch without having to empty large amounts or wait too long to change.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Odd Odour When I received the Ahab I was delighted with the ease of filling, the colour, the way it wrote but wow what a perfumed odour emanates from this pen, even staying on my fingers after a thorough washing. For me this was devastating as I truly loved the pen but having sensitivity to strong smells, I have had to clean and put my Ahab away. I truly wish I knew of some way to get rid of the odour that for me can actually trigger an asthmatic attack.
