The TWSBI Diamond 580ALR comes with a benchmark piston ink-filling mechanism and has all detachable parts. The clear demonstrator barrel allows you to see your ink color and remaining ink level. This special edition fountain pen has a textured navy blue aluminum grip section, cap ring, and piston knob. The aluminum is enhanced with a subtle matte finish, with circular engravings in the grip and cap area. It comes with a stainless steel nib and is presented in a modern clear display case.

The idea behind the TWSBI Diamond 580 was to go back to basics and capture the simplicity and elegance of traditional writing instruments. In recent years, the development and modernization of writing instruments has resulted in traditional writing instruments, such as fountain pens, falling into obscurity. It was TWSBI's goal to bring the past back to life by creating a traditional fountain pen that even modern day society can appreciate.

The TWSBI Diamond 580 is a classic fountain pen with a piston ink-filling system. By fusing the traditional mechanisms of the fountain pen with a modern industrial design, TWSBI has created an eye-catching fountain pen that is simultaneously appreciative of the past and relevant in the present.

TWSBI's belief is that it is important to allow the user to disassemble and reassemble the pen and completely experience the traditional aspects of owning and using a fountain pen. These pens also come packaged with a wrench and silicone grease. Neither of these accessories are intended to be used immediately, as they are for long-term care and maintenance. Additionally, please use extra care if you choose to disassemble the nib and feed, as the feed is very fragile.

You may notice a white substance on your 580AL or 580ALR pistons. This is bearing grease, and must not be removed during cleanings, or replaced by silicone grease.

Awesome pen

This is an awesome pen! It does have some weaknesses. Make sure you do not drop the pen, the threads on the cap are plastic and can strip. Also, the plastic threads glued to the cap can break.

My First

TWSBI that is… This was also my first purchase with Goulet Pens. Both experiences were indeed a pleasure.

TWSBI Diamond 580 ALR navy blue

Love this pen. I preferred fine point retractable Sharpies to any $30 fountain pens I’d tried, but making the jump to this 580 was a game changer. I was spending over $100 in Sharpies every year. While I know the benefits of other filling systems, I Love the piston filler the most. Loosening the finial of a vacuum filler to keep scribing feels as loose and crazy as unzipping your trousers just to walk another block. The 1.1 stub is super forgiving too, if one is new to nibs. Since it’s a demonstrator, I always know how much ink I have sloshing in the barrel, so I don’t run out. If I change my ink, I change my pen color, and Every ink color goes with the navy blue trim. Since its purchase, I’ve acquired ‘fancier’ pens, but I always carry this in a case, upright in my bag should I need a back up, as it has proven to be consistently reliable. This pen turned me into a nerd. This is the pen I’d have to replace if I were to lose it. It’s a work horse.

TWSBI consistency.

The TWSBI 580 series is wonderful, and each new color just adds to their appeal. I am very reluctant to use inks with particulate elements that allow for shading and shimmer, but leave me nervous about clogging the nib of my pens. The ease with which this pen comes apart and reassembles makes it very simple to clean thoroughly. The pen is a great size and weight for me, and the TWSBI nibs are reliably smooth and consistent.

What was I thinking.

I just want to say right off the top, it’s just not for me. This is the first “expensive” for me pen and I blew it. The exposed twist for filling ink… that **** unlocks nightmare mode. Without being able to post it I am always afraid of the accidental twist. I am an artist type and not particularly careful and methodical like some of you pen nerds 🤣

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!
