Lamy Al-Star Fountain Pen - Purple, Fine is rated 4.8462 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Starter Pen I recently upgraded from a Pilot Varsity (disposable) fountain pen to this Lamy Al-Star, and I've been really happy with it. I particularly appreciate that the grip has been helping me to hold it correctly. I've borrowed my boyfriend's Cross before and I felt at a loss for how to hold it so as to get smooth flow without putting too much pressure on the nib. This shade of purple coordinates well with my laptop, as they are quite similar shades of "plum". I also recommend getting the black steel nib since it matches the grip better than the regular. Speaking of nibs, Lamys seem to run a little broader, so keep that in mind (and look at the Nib Nook) before choosing your breadth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at first write! This is my first Lamy. I was reluctant to buy one initially despite favorable reviews because they looked kinda clunky and I thought they might feel too big in my small hands. But I went ahead with the purchase anyway because I wanted a pen that I could use a converter with. Wow, why did I wait so long?! I love this pen...I knew it the minute I picked it up to write with it. If feels totally balanced and natural in my grip, writes beautifully (I got the Fine nib), is pretty to look at, and is well-made. Now I know why everyone raves about Lamys. It is a great step up from my Ohto Tasche (which I still like but don't particularly favor the F nib on it as it is a tad too fine for my preferences). Just a lovely, lovely pen. It makes me want to pick it up and write or draw with it every time I look at it! I am going to buy a couple more + converters from Goulet so that I can keep one in my purse and one in my sketch kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lamy Al-Star and Goulet I normally don't write reviews but I am so impressed with the service from Goulet pens, I had to write. Got my order in a few days and I even got a Tootsie Pop-bonus! The Lamy Al-Star is an amazing pen and writes really well. I do sketching with pen and watercolor pencils. I did get the Z24 converter and some Noodler's ink. Great combination. Thanks Goulet Pens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Merry Christmas for a fussy writer Aesthetically: gorgeous, unusual maroonish-purple pen with clean, elegant lines & very clever clip design. Functionally: I was concerned the sturdy metal body might be heavy in my small hands - no problem, even when writing posted. The ink flow is perfect for me, a steady middle-of-the-road inker. I usually write with an Asian F point & the Lamy F is a bit wider but not egregiously so. While I may try a Lamy EF nib on this I'm in no hurry to do so & it's nice to have the option. All-around: it's a winner! It holds more ink than a Metropolitan, has a silky-smooth nib (tested at factory - nice!), a very positive cap keeps the nib from drying out when it sits, and it just looks stunning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this pen I wanted a snap cap fountain pen that writes really well. I tried a Safari, and really liked that. Got the Al-Star, like it even better. Both EF nibs. Now I fiddle with the nibs. I widen or tighten up the slot, give them a touch more roundness in the tip of the slot so they don't scratch so much, polish them a bit. The Safari and the Al-Star are just about perfect. I prefer the feel of the Al-Star body. Although I was less successful with the nib fiddling so far. Could be just a different ink. The snap cap works great. Keeps the nib wet for a long time. Good wetness, not too wet, not too dry. The pocket clip is good, it's easy to put in a pocket and isn't going to shred things. The Al-Star nib needed a little touch up so that it was even and symmetrical. These two pens (with black and red ink) are just what I needed, and are what I always use now. Since I don't desire to be a pen collector, I will probably give away or sell my other pens. Maybe try a Lamy 2000 some day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pen, still figuring out the nib I've used a Vista for a while and wanted to try out one of Lamy's metal-body pens. This is very comparable in size and weight to the Vista/Safari line, but with a nice, cool, smooth metal feel that grips well. I got a black EF nib on it, which looks awesome with the purple pen, but it's been a bit dry and scratchy. I'm slowly making adjustments to it, and it's getting better, though still not as smooth as the M nib on my Vista. I bought this to be a sketching/writing pen, and it does a nice job on the sketches especially.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great everyday performer The Lamy AL-Star is a reliable, comfortable, inexpensive writer with a smooth nib and good ink flow. The dark purple aluminum finish makes it special without being pretentious. Ideal for everyday carrying and writing. The nibs are easily interchangeable on the fly and the 1.1mm stub is a great balance between a normal round tip and a broad italic. Adds some style to the writing while being tolerant of the casual user.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lamy Al-Star Fountain Pen I gifted this to my wife as her first fountain pen, and she has quickly begun using it exclusively. I 've been a loyal customer to the Goulet Pen Company since their great and instructional videos helped me to purchase and use my first fountain pen. I'd strongly recommend the Lamy Safari or AL-Star, and even more strongly, that you patronize a fantastic shop.
