The Palisades Octagonal LE™ — Chinkin Hummingbird captures the color and movement of a hummingbird in flight against a deep black urushi lacquer background. Brilliant blue and green plumage, warm floral tones, and fine gold details wrap around the octagonal body, creating a composition that changes as the pen is turned in the hand.

This release is a US retailer exclusive - only available in the US at Goulet Pens!

The design is created using Chinkin, a traditional Japanese lacquer technique applied over an ebonite fountain pen body. The artisan carves individual lines and details directly into the hardened lacquer surface. Additional lacquer is worked into these incisions before gold leaf and powder are applied, leaving the decoration embedded within the carved surface. This exacting process creates a deliberately smooth barrel, with the decoration and sheen beautifully integrated into the pen itself. While the majority of Chinkin pens you typically see feature a gold or silver fill, this pen stands out for its vibrancy and use of a number of different colors.

Here, Chinkin is used to render the hummingbird’s feathers, surrounding foliage, and fine details with exceptional definition. Against the black urushi lacquer, the vivid bird and flowers appear almost suspended above the surface, while the octagonal form reveals different portions of the composition from every angle.

This fountain pen is a limited edition of 30 pens worldwide, and each pen is numbered **/30 on the bottom finial. Each pen is equipped with a magnificent two-tone 18K gold nib made in Japan. The pen fills with either a proprietary Sailor converter (included) or Sailor ink cartridges, and a pen sleeve comes with each pen.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Sailor ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
