Unexpected Treasure!

I got a sample of this ink with the 8-pack random sample set. I had looked over the swatches when I was contemplating which blue I wanted to try with my first fountain pen, but chose a different ink, not thinking too much of the images presented here. Somehow I missed the sheening properties that are so obvious in the photos. Boy, was I surprised when I inked up my brand new TWSBI ECO with Diamine Oxford Blue and fell in love! When writing large, I could swear I was seeing some sheening (I was) even though I was certain I hadn't noticed it being listed as having sheening properties (it is). When swatching it, pow! Just enough sheening to come through in a subtle way, but not enough to overpower the blue and make the color look purple or red. It adds so much character to my writing, even if it is "just" a dark blue. When shopping, I had been trying to find a perfect true dark blue that wouldn't reveal teal or purple undertones, and this one meets that requirement! It also doesn't have a desaturated look. It is confidently blue, but without being too bright or flashy. It flows beautifully out of the broad nib. I write fairly large, and in print, so the shading comes through wonderfully. It doesn't feather or bleed on the 120gsm paper I use in my notebook. I don't think I have even seen any ghosting, even on dollar store index cards! The dark portions of my letters are deep and rich, the lighter parts still clearly legible. I highly recommend this blue to anyone who is looking for a reliable and beautiful TRUE blue, who doesn't want anything too flashy or high maintenance!

Love Is Blue

So blue it's almost black. None of this lightweight sky blue stuff. The deep blue just before night. I love it.

Diamine Oxford Blue trial run

This is impressive. Even with a wider nib, such as stub, the colour does not fade but is consistent, a deep blue.

Rich Dark Blue! Easy on the eyes, Beautiful on the page, Perfect Journaling Ink!

This is the perfect dark blue for journaling or formal situations that don't require permanent ink. This blue is dark without crossing the line into the black territory. The color is rich dark blue/navy. It is a saturated color and has no dusty undertones like many other dark blues tend to have. It writes on the wet side and drys fairly quickly. It also resists smudging once dried well. It doesn't have water-resistant properties, but it does wash out of pens easily without staining. It is a color that has a good personality but is easy to read for long periods. I would feel fine sending my older relatives a letter written in this ink knowing that I wasn't going to strain their eyes. I suppose the trade-off is that some may see this ink as "boring" as it isn't as punchy as something like Turquoise of the Mesas from Noodlers, but after reading a page or two of a punchy ink, it loses its novelty.

Mesmerizing in person

I'm not usually fond of blue inks but I cannot get over how complex this blue is in person. It's a dark blue with an indigo aspect, almost like the color of night just after sunset. Truly spectacular!

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
