De Atramentis Aubergine

Not an expert user (yet) but was just smitten with the subtle brownish purple color and beautiful flow of this ink. I had to go buy the full bottle - hard to find. Apparently De Atramentis Alexander Hamilton is the same color. I'm a fan of colors that stand out on the page, as this does, while still being complex and a bit moody.

Love it - use for daily note taking

Loved the sample so much that I bought a bottle. This eggplant purple is so beautiful. Goes on wet and dries quickly. After drying, it does smudge a bit if you have sweaty hands but I don't mind. I love it that much. And I just don't touch my writing again. I use this every day for note taking.

I love this ink.

I'm definitely going to buy a bottle of this, and soon. I tested it in a TWSBI Eco with a broad nib, mostly on Black n' Red Optik paper and a little on Claifountaine paper. I'm still new to fountain pens, but I liked it very much. It's by far the wettest ink I've tried so far -- for reference, the others were J. Herbin Perle Noir, Poussiere de Lune, and Violette Pensee, along with De Atramentis Document Violet. With the broad nib, the ink is much darker than I expected, even though I saw many reviewers say the same thing. It looks black in most light, especially when next to a lighter ink. But even next to black, it looks almost black, but not quite, and there is a vibrancy and intensity to the color and degree of saturation that black ink doesn't have. If you look at it closely, though, you can see that parts of it look purple. It has lots of shading, considering how dark it is. This strikes me as a perfect gothic-looking ink. However, it's also dark enough and subtle enough that I think it would work well in professional settings, though admittedly I'm not in office work, and so not an adequate judge of that. It's an extremely wet and smooth writer, and very well-behaved, with the sole exception that it is *very* hard to clean out of pens. So you may want to dedicate one pen exclusively to it, which is what I plan to do, and be careful with it with your demonstrators if that bothers you. I haven't actually tested it in on cheap paper, but I strongly suspect that with how wet it writes that it would bleed through that, at least a bit. But it didn't with good paper. Another caveat for people with allergies, asthma, or sensitive noses or lungs is that it has a pretty awful chemical smell, which is seeming to me like it might be common with purple inks, as three of the four I tried did, but it's really only a problem when refilling the pen. This is probably one of only three inks I'll keep a pen inked with at all times -- the others being Poussiere de Lune, and a waterproof or water-reistant black ink when I find one I like enough to buy a bottle of. I did not personally test the water resistance of this ink, but I'm ranking it highly because I've seen it reviewed as good here and elsewhere online. Images are a test page written on Black n' Red Optik paper written with a TWSBI Eco with a broad nib with the flash on and off.

Solid

A slightly different shade of the purple star rating for this website. It works well in my faber-castell loom M nib. It's a bit paper-picky, light feathering and medium to low bleed-through. However the bleed-through is weird on one of my papers (above average smoothness and thickness, but still absorbent). As seen in the picture, it looks like the water aspect of the ink separates a bit. There is some water resistance, most of the color will wash away and leave a dark grey permanence.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
