Rated 5 out of 5 by from First "Quality" Ink I've just gotten in to fountain pens by using them in my art and concept designs. I tried several *eh-hem* commonly found brands in stores (no names, but if one shops at any box art store you'll find the villains) and was frustrated with clogs, etc. Switched to this ink and found great flow and no issues. I have nothing to compare this ink other than the other nameless brands which, incidentally, aren't available on this site. I found that a big clue as to quality of product. This ink is good, and one that doesn't use dye but the pigmentation so it lasts longer in terms of archival properties. I'm still learning, so some of my ratings on the product properties (dry time, etc.) my not be spot on due to my still learning about pens and inks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect black True black. Goes on the page smoothly. Dries very fast. Waterproof. Impossible to erase without destroying the paper. My guess is that the "nano" pigment particle size, combined with a low viscosity, low surface tension, and rapidly penetrating carrier liquid, allows the pigment to mesh intimately with the paper fibers, thus providing the permanent quality that meets the European specs for permanence. It is probably worth noting that this ink is very similar, in all ways, to the De Atramentis Document Black. This one, the Archive, seems a little more penetrating to me. As a result, the finish is slightly flatter, but just as deep black, IMO, which is my personal preference. They are really close. If you're so inclined, one can try a sample of each from the Goulets. For many years I used one of the several versions of Noodlers bulletproof black, which gets its permanence by chemically bonding with the cellulose in paper, but I now prefer the quick penetration, quick drying, and deep blackness of either of the black inks in the De Atramentis Document Series, with a slight nod to the Archive. it is probably also worth noting that this ink, along with the other half-dozen Document series inks I have used, has never given me the slightest problem with any pen, even if not used for weeks. For reference, Archive is the regular fill in a Pelikan M800 fine point that has been with me for decades, and an occasional fill in one of several TWSBI's, mostly with stub nibs. In a half century (yikes!) of using fountain pens, I've probably used most of the black inks on the market at one time or another. Without question, this is my all-time favorite. Well, so much for an old guy's POV on that most boring of topics, black ink. I hope this was useful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Especially smooth, not as black as I wanted. I've tried about 6 inks so far, this ink being the first. I was hoping that an "archive" quality ink would have more pigment and depth than other inks. I see that it does in many ways, but I dont know if my expectations are higher than what's realistically available. This is a very black ink, it leans towards the warmer side, perhaps I am looking for a cooler black. My true appreciation for this ink came when i tried an additional 5 types and colors of ink. Few compare to the darkness of this ink, and so far none compare to how smooth this feels. So far, the other inks that I've tried have a watery feel to them, even if the color is good, I do think they feel a bit of friction-ish drag when using them. Even with De Atramentis black-brown I felt the extra drag. Something about this archive ink really runs extra smooth for me. I'm using cheap pens like the Pilot Metropolitan and common types of paper right now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like it Solid black, waterproof, flows well, drys pretty quickly, and can make your Noodler's Ahab pen actually work right! Great with watercolor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I wanted! I ordered this ink about a week and a half ago, and after waiting in agony the entire time (not long at all considering it was an overseas shipment) I finally got to pick it up this morning. Obviously I couldn't wait to fill up my Pilot Metropolitan with it and I have to say, it writes beautifully. The ink dries fairly quickly - about 8 seconds on my Clairefontaine Triomphe A5 correspondence pad - with great depth and a nice matte finish. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a smooth, silky black ink.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great black ink! I just bought a bottle and it is the ink I use as an everyday ink for the office. I still can't find any diference with the Document black ink though. They look to be exactly the same. I think maybe this one does not dry so dull. The black is more brilliant when dry. Good flow, good tone, and it's permanent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite ink I keep notebooks that require permanent archival quality. The Archive ink is now the only ink I use. It is waterproof and dark. With other similar inks, the pen required sometimes weekly cleaning. This ink flows well and never clogs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from rich black, dries quickly I use this ink in my Twsby fountain pen for writing and sketching. It flows smoothly, dries quickly..5 seconds to smudgeproof.-permanent when dry, so it is also good for watercolor wash. Nice true black.
