One of two special edition colors for 2024 summer! This fountain pen features a glossy pastel teal barrel and cap, with a bright yellow grip, clip, and finial.

The LAMY safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The safari comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter.

Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

I Really Wanted To Love It

This came so highly recommended and I was so excited to try it. I ordered it in the Extra-Fine nib and found I absolutely HATE the writing experience. The nib was very "dry" I guess is the word, the ink didn't flow out evenly and writing in print was exhausting. Cursive worked best but I still hated the extra-fine nib. I've ordered a Medium nib so I'm hoping it changes my opinion! The pen itself is light and overall comfortable to hold. It does become tail heavy (for me) when posted so I use it without the cap.

Smooth Writer

This is my first Lamy, and I'm in love. It writes smoothly, and the medium nib is perfect for me.

A fun beginner pen

It’s a great pen. The EF nib is a little scratchy, but other than that I really enjoy it

Love the color and reinvigorated my interest in LAMY

The Pina Colada color is what finally got me to purchase a LAMY Safari. My first LAMY was an AL-star, which I've always found too heavy to comfortably write with for a long time, even unposted. This Safari may have swayed me back to LAMY. The pen is bright and glossy and the color scheme is delightfully bright. I've found the medium nib to be much more flowy than my AL-star's fine nib which has made it a blast to fill with glittery sheening inks. This special edition pen feels exciting enough that it's always a joy to use, while bringing it's spirited tones to a lightweight plastic pen I feel comfortable using for anything and carrying with me anywhere.

Struck by genius while laying on a palm-shaded beach...

I'd been pondering over a sticky point in my novel for quite a while. What if I took pen and paper to the beach and avoided eye contact with the laptop for a while? Then it struck me. The answer I'd been looking for was whispered into my mind on a tropic breeze. I immediately put down the nongreasy sunscreen, uncapped the gorgeous pen, posted the colorful cap, and jotted two words... "pneumatic stilts". Ahhh, now I can rest easy.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!
