Great Ink, Well-Behaved in most Pen/Paper Combinations

I am on a quest for a waterproof black, as I need that for my work. And one that works well on copy paper, as well as in the notebooks I use to track my research notes. The Bernanke Black dries crazy fast, which I love, as well as being waterproof. The ink had varied results based on the pen used and the paper written on. Since I greatly appreciated the really thorough reviews others left on here, I want to do the same. PEN: Monteverde Innova EF Nib (drier writer of my two pens)- Copy Paper: Wrote and behaved perfectly. Good saturated black, dries instantly, only the tiniest hint of feathering. Excellent Pen-to-Paper Flow.- Exceed Notebooks: Flow is a lot drier in the notebook, flow isn't as good.PEN: Hong Dian Black Forest EF Nib (from Amazon) (wetter writer of my two pens)- Copy Paper: Put down a lot more ink, has a wet flow that spreads and feathers on copy paper, as well as ghosting and bleeds through.- Exceed Notebooks: It writes much wetter with this pen, and is just awesome in notebooks. It's not quite an instant dry anymore, but is still fast. Has the best Pen-to-Paper flow of all the combinations. OVERALL NOTES: - The ink doesn't go back and forth between the papers very smoothly. Because of this, Platinum's Carbon Black will probably beat it out as my Holy Grail WP Black Ink. But this was the closest runner up from the samples I've tested so far. But the cost per milliliter compared to the PCB, I may grab a bottle specifically for when I know I'll be doing a lot of writing in just my notebook for a while.

Bernanke Black works well

I bought this ink for a left-handed colleague. We teach the 1st year drawing class together. I got a bottle for myself as well. The ink is terrific; very fast dryer, good opacity, surprisingly good flow (using both fine & extra fine TWSBI minis), no bleed through on either standard note cards or Moleskin. If you need a good black ink with a fast dying time ? whatever the reason ? then consider this the ink.

Super-speedy drier

On most papers, this dries so fast that I CAN'T smudge it. On Rhodia, it's a little slower, but looks better. In my LAMY M and B nibs, this ink doesn't feather at all. But, in a very fine flex nib I have on another pen, it feathers like crazy.Anyhoo, this and Bay-State Blue are the two inks I carry everywhere with me.

My first ink

Great ink for a first-time fountain pen user. Using this in a Lamy Safary with an EF nib. Great, 8/10 darkness from a scale of 0 (white?) to 10 (black).Dries very quickly. Not bulletproof, but doesn't claim to be. Can look washed out with broader nibs. Looks great in my Noodler's standard flex.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
