Wolf Moon (狼月) is the name traditionally given to the first full moon of January. The name is associated with the sound of wolves howling through the stillness of winter. Wolves surviving the harsh season together as a pack have long represented strong bonds and unity, while a young wolf eventually leaving its pack has also come to symbolize independence.

The design captures that contrast through a solitary white wolf standing beneath a brilliant winter moon. The wolf is rendered in silver powder and layers of white, light blue, and bluish-purple lacquer. Its eye is accented with Raden, or mother-of-pearl, creating a sharp point of light against the otherwise quiet, monochromatic landscape.

The surrounding winter landscape is carefully constructed to evoke the stillness and cold of a moonlit night. Silver powder is used throughout the shadowed trees and delicate plants, creating the impression of a deep forest illuminated by moonlight. The wolf, cliff, trees, and plants are expressed through Hira Maki-e, while Togidashi Maki-e is used throughout the starry sky and background.

Raden adds flashes of light to the composition, most notably in the wolf’s eye and in the background of the trees. Silver powder carries throughout the design, connecting the moon, landscape, and sky while helping to create the freezing atmosphere of a winter night. The full moon is also expressed with silver powder, producing a soft, gentle light against the darker surroundings.

The restrained palette is an important part of the design. Built around silver, black, white, and cool-toned lacquer, Wolf Moon creates a predominantly monochromatic world in which the white wolf and the shimmer of Raden stand out with striking presence. The contrast between the dark landscape, silver detailing, and luminous accents brings the winter scene to life across the pen.

The pen matches the Yukari size but with a flat top, has an 18k gold nib (#10 size), fills via Pilot/Namiki cartridge/converter (a CON-70 is included), and comes packaged in a velvet-lined wooden box. A bottle of Namiki black ink is also included.
