The Monteverde Axis fountain pen collection was inspired by the perfection of balance. It features a gear-like midsection that connects to a slim, elongated cap and matching barrel. This prevents the pen from rolling around on your desk.

The Axis is made of matte orange anodized aluminum and is lightweight and comfortable in hand, and available with a JoWo #5 nib in a variety of nib sizes. The Axis fills via a mini converter, and has a magnetic cap.

Excellent pocket pen.

I was looking for another pocket pen and loved the design for the Axis. I have a Ritma I like so decided to take the chance and I'm glad I did.
I don't often pay caps much attention, but this magnetic cap is sorta catchy. It makes a satisfying click when closing or posting. It posts beautifully giving the pen a good length and balance. The metal is solid but light. I wasn't sure I'd like the grooved barrel for a grip, but it turned out to be comfortable to hold.
The pen writes beautifully and I didn't notice much scratchiness with the medium nib and Birmingham Pen Co. Tintype ink.
I'm very pleased with this purchase and look forward to it becoming my primary pen soon. Though my one regret is that I didn't get it in the fine nib as the medium nib tends to run on some regular paper. Overall I recommend it as a pocket pen that can also be used for long form writing.

My EDC fountain pens - IMO look better with age

Consider this a "twofer". I bought a blue Axis, in medium, and then bought an orange in bold because I liked the pen. Photo shows both pens, and a chicken-scratch writing sample (early drafts of a couple haiku I've been working for weeks now - not as happy with them as I am with the pens.) I found both pens to be scratchy, like the other reviewer, but it's ink specific. The blue initially was filled with Diamine Blue Velvet, and it wasn't scratchy after the first dozen or so lines of writing. Smooth and wet. Refilled with Monteverde Malibu Blue and it was kind of scratchy. Not terribly but more than I'd expect from a Monteverde nib. Dumped, refilled with Diamine Sapphire Blue and not scratchy. It seems to crave something that the Diamine inks provide. I inked the orange pen with JHerbin Orange Indien (all matchy-matchy) and while I like the bolder line more and the ink color, it's a bit scratchy. Scratchy in both cases isn't a major tragic flaw, just a bit annoying. All comparisons on decent paper. Photo shows the pen's wear in an EDC usage. The blue pen rides in my pocket with two companions - a small stainless steel cased pocket knife and a compact inkball pen (various models). The wear from banging against the stainless steel knife is on the edges of the pen grip area and I think it looks great, a working pen patina. Summing up - excellent pocket pen, well suited for EDC; the magnets are fun!; I like the broad nib better, but the medium isn't bad at all; unlike other Monteverde pens I've got, they write more smoothly with some inks, a little fussy, but with the right ink smooth and wet and flowing. And I'm feeling like I may need a black one...

Nice weight, unique look, a bit scratchy

This pen has a good weight to it and once posted, is long enough to write with, though probably too thin for some people. Doesn’t roll off a desk and I trust it to stay capped. The material feels nice in the hand and the orange is a pleasant shade. It writes reliably but is a bit scratchy and flow is a bit spotty sometimes. Overall, happy with it!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
