This black resin Magnum fountain pen is one of Diplomat’s most affordable offerings. The special no-slip lacquer gives the body a soft touch, and it has a black ergonomic grip section. It comes equipped with a smooth writing JoWo stainless steel nib, chrome trim, and fills via standard international cartridge/converter (both are included).

not bad

pen is cheap, nib is good

Good Pen after a bit of tuning..

Initially the nib was a bit scratchy and the feed wasn't that wet. I pulled out the feed and washed the nib and feed with some dish soap. After that the feed behaved a lot better, but the nib was still scratchy after making sure the tines were aligned, so I smoothed it out a bit on some micro mesh and now it writes great. It is pretty light, and very thin for me, leading to fatigue pretty quickly. I like the pen and use it, but it's not a regular in my rotation. The Twsbi swipe/go have a much larger grip section diameter and required a similar amount of work to reach full potential.

Overally I'd recommend it to someone who wants a slender light cartridge/converter pen, and is willing to do a bit of extra work to get there, probably better as an intermediate pen than a beginner pen.

Great Writing Pen

I *love* the Diplomat feed and nib - they write GREAT...but the Magnum is just to skinny of a pen for me and seems almost too light in the hand. Writing with it hurts my big, fat, ham-hands. Here's the secret - I actually bought this pen to harvest the nib and feed to go into a "Frankenstein Pen" to solve the diameter issue. The nib and feed from this pen, after a LOT of X-Acto knife carving and sanding, is now installed into a Jinhao 9016 body. I get the really nice size grip of the 9016...with the almost unbeatable nib and feed of the Magnum. A coworker's son named it the DipliJin! And that name has stuck and it's a favorite of mine.

My most fickle pen

I've had this pen for over a year, inked with a couple of Noodler's inks, and it's not the greatest thing at this price point that I've written with. It will dry out if you don't use it. Even with an EF nib, the feed doesn't always want to keep up with a longer writing session, so I've had to prime the feed several times. The slight flex is impressive, but not really needed. Overall, I'd recommend using your wettest ink for this pen if you're still interested. I just can't give it more than 2 stars with my experiences.

My least favorite pen

Apologies to everyone who loves this pen, but I just do not. The nib flexes too much, the ink flow is inconsistent, and the material feels cheap. I understand it's a cheap pen, but plenty of brands, like Pilot and Platinum, do inexpensive without being cheap.

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges?

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

How do I use a converter?

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

How do I clean this fountain pen?

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
