Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap High Quality Ink This ink lives up to all my expectations. It performs exactly as shown in the Goulet video review. You can leave the ink in the pen for days without it clogging the tip. It tries rather quickly for a permanent ink. It's great for legal papers, letters, and for general writing. I use this ink for my note taking in college on cheap thin paper that I got from office max and it penetrates 40% less than other non-perm inks. The dark navy/grey mix color is perfect for official writing but I would love to see this ink in different colors to brighten up my reading. The color is everything you would expect with a name of "54th Massachusetts".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lovely color, dries in the nib This ink is a really great blue-grey, reminiscent of civil war era uniforms. It can tend toward blue-black if a bit dry in the nib. The issue I have is the drying in the nib. I have had this ink in three fountain pens with what i would consider a fairly high flow rate to dry up in the nib with only a day of non use. I admit that I use mostly fine nibs for every day use, but any ink should flow well in a fine nib unless formulated for dipping only. I will keep this ink as I do enjoy it, and maybe in a VERY free flowing nib it will meet expectations, right now I am resigned to completely flushing the nib every week if i want to use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't forget to shake Fell in love at first fill, fell out of love, now back in love. I bought this about a year ago to have a bulletproof ink and because it had a great reputation. It wrote a gorgeous if shifting blue-black grey before turning into a super sky-blue on me. Then I shook the bottle like Bart did Homer's April Fool's beer can and it came back! I'm in love again. I've never had problems with performance in my workhorse Lamy Pur XF or Monteverde Nighthawk F and Rhodia 80g or Clairfontaine 90g. Easy to clean despite its water resistance. Great safe color for the office, documents, notes and daily use. Props to the label artist, too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HELP... I want to love it! I love this color, I do...but it performs terribly in EVERY pen I've inked up with it. Nib creep, dry starts, even clogging the pen. I even went so far as to buy an Ahab & Goulet Nib (which I am completely in love with btw) to see if that might be the magic combo...that was actually THE worst performer! In less than a day there was so much crusted in around the nib & feed I had to take a cloth to the nib and almost push the plunger just to get it to start up. I'm amazed at all these reviews that talk about smooth flow cause this ink performs like elmer's glue in my pens! I'm so sad!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like It Just inked up with the new Massachusetts blue/black. It's very similar to Noodler's blue/black. Possible a little lighter, but hard to see much difference color wise. It writes well with no noticible feathering or bleed through on Rhodia and regular copier paper. A little on the wet side in Twsbi 540 F nib and Edison Premiere F nib. Dry time is a little longer than Noodler's blue black. Has a definite ink odor which I liked. Will probably be a regular in my rotation of blue-blacks, but I think I still prefer Noodler's regular blue-black.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! This is simply awesome ink. Blue-black, but not the standard, boring kind--it has hints of teal and grey. Dries fast and doesn't bleed through or feather on any paper I've tried it on, not even Post-It notes. Barely budges when it comes in contact with water, even if you dunk the page. Smooth writing, too. Shades just a little, but I didn't buy it for the shading. Can't find any important faults with this ink. Because I work in a lab and need a permanent, conservative-coloured ink, my Pilot Metropolitan will probably be on a constant diet of this stuff. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Ink I was looking for an ink I could use daily for everyday tasks both at work and home, a dependable ink that didn't run or smear, and this is it. Very well behaved in my fine nib Kultur. Starts right away, no feathering or bleed through. I can address envelopes, sign checks, write as fast as I want, all without having to baby the pen or worry about smearing. Once dry the ink is permanent. The color is supposed to be blue-black, and inside my demonstrator Kultur it has a blue tinge, but on paper it looks black with a slightly greenish cast. A bit more interesting than straight black, I think. A wonderful everyday ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 54th Massachusetts a Long Awaited Favorite I really enjoy blue-black inks. They offer a unique alternative to the ?bic? blues we see every day. Noodlers Massachusetts 54th lends an almost a ?smoky? hint to the ink reminiscent of the battles in which the 54th fought. This ink?s color along with its historical significance honoring the first regiment of African American volunteers to be raised by a Northern stare during the Civil War make it a favorite among my inks. It flows very well in my Waterman Liaison (bold nib custom ground to a 0.7 mm stub) and is not prohibitively difficult to clean. Thank you Goulet for the recommendation.
