INK SAMPLE - Noodler's Heart of Darkness is rated 4.5373 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick Drying Black I tested three Noodler's inks: Black, Heart of Darkness and Dark Matter. Black was clearly the "blackest" of the three followed by Heart of Darkness with Dark Matter having a noticeably grey undertone when viewed side by side. They all appear black when viewed separately. Black seemed to have the longest drying time followed by Dark Matter with Heart of Darkness drying almost immediately. Black and Heart of Darkness seemed to have little feathering with Dark Matter displaying just a little more feathering. Just FYI, this is a work pen and I use cheap paper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noodler's Heart of Darkness I'll confine my review to the ink, since the pen has yet to be inked. I bought HOD as a replacement for Noodler's Polar Black in a Sailor 1911 with a medium nib. The ink is black. Even the white bits. There have been no issues with starting. Minor quibbles are that is can take a while to dry, especially on glossy paper, and that there is slight feathering on cheaper paper. Both issues are likely magnified with a nib that dumps more ink on to the paper. The nib feels slightly scratchier than with PB, but lubrication is not one of HOD's advertised properties. Very happy with the ink overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first ink The Noodler's HOD is my first jump into the fountain pen/ink world. I have used it for about 2 weeks and I think I will continue using it as my primary black for a long time. Since this is my first ink, I cannot compare it to anything. However, it is a fairly quick drying ink and is well saturated. I usually use this ink on lower grade paper, as such there is a bit of feathering, shadowing, and sometimes bleedthrough. However, that is the fault of the low quality paper, not the ink. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of this ink.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Forget Creeping - it totally flooded my pen! I received this ink sample as part of Ink Drop, and it's awful. It's incredibly runny. Noodler's inks creep sometimes, but this just completely leaked everywhere - I had to completely disassemble my pen in order to clean ink out of the section and barrel. Additionally, even though I store my pens nib up, as soon as I uncapped this pen to write with it, ink came running out of the nib and feed. Once I cleaned the pen and reassembled it, I filled it with another ink and everything was fine, so it's not the pen. I've never had leaking issues with the pen in question before, either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HOD - Like Noodler's Black, only much wetter I love Noodler's Black, but I've been reading reviews about HOD being a favorite of many people so I thought I'd try a sample. It is a bulletproof as NB. It's also as black as NB. I don't see any difference between HOD and NB with respect to the blackness. However, What can make HOD seem blacker is when it is used on an absorbent paper or with a wet pen. It soaks right into the paper, and that gives the appearance of a blacker ink. HOD dries much more quickly than NB, so if you need a quick drying permanent black, this is the one. A consequence of the quick drying and wetness is some bleedthrough apparent on most papers. I was able to use NB on my Moleskine paper with not bleed- or show-through. HOD has a bit of bleed and does show more on the back side of a page. It flows wonderfully. This would be a good permanent black for a dry pen, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy this if you're looking for a black ink. This ink goes on the page (Rhodia tablet paper) in a blackety black black black color. The contrast between the paper and the ink line is a razor-sharp difference with no shading perceptible to my eye. There is a little bit of a sheen to the line where the ink was laid down a bit heavier but that is the only thing I notice for variation in this ink. The sheen is also black, but shinier. Dry time is very short. Feathering, even on super cheap paper (I've been filling out my time sheet at work with this) is nearly non-existent. Compared and contrasted with the El Lawrence: The El Lawrence has a much more green-grey tint to the black than Heart of Darkness. I don't think there could really be a more black black ink than HoD - if you know of one that is blacker, please let me know.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Needs a fine or extra fine point I really liked the ink..really waterproof and very dark. It is very wet and in a medium or broad nib it is to thick for my preferences. I have it in another Lamy 2000 extra fine and it is perfect in this pen. Prefer the regular bottle to this big bottle as it is hard to see how far to dip the pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Perfect My first transaction with Goulet Pen Company was a simple one; a bottle of ink. But it was as important as a signature in black could be. The order was handled perfectly and what more could I ask for. Honest business, quick and fair. My kind of company.
