Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome package to try out fountain pens This is an awesome package for trying out fountain pens. Now I'm hooked. Getting a pen that works and has been very straight forward and easy to use, a great pad of paper that is very nice to right on and handles the variety of inks really well and a bunch of ink sample in all different colors has been a real pleasure to work with. After a couple of weeks of trying different inks I've ordered two more pens and have started using them as my primary tools for work and journaling. Finding the colors that work best for organizing notes is great. I feel bad for my nice roller ball pens that are now getting neglected more and more. For someone wanting to jump in to the world of fountain pens and inks for minimal investment, I highly recommend this package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Starter! I bought this pack as a way to start getting into fountain pens. So far, the Metro has held up incredibly well and is now my every day carry pen for classes. The Rhodia grid pad is very nice as well, bringing out the colors of the inks quite nicely. The ink samples I received were varied in color and style and I'm really quite pleased. I've only tried two of them so far and have already decided to buy a full bottle of one (Noodlers GI Green) soon! I'm very excited to continue this foray into the world of fountain pens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Learning Curve This is my first fountain pen and I have learned a few new things about writing and pens. Some paper is not made for fountain pen ink. Standard paper either soaks up the ink and makes writing fuzzy, or does not soak the ink and then the writing smears. The Rhodia paper that came with the kit does very well, with no fuzzing or unabsorbed ink. The paper has a dotted grid type pattern on each sheet, almost like graph paper but dots, rather than lines. I originally stored the pen with the nib up, afraid of leaking. This led to a dry nib. There is no problem of leaking or excess ink upon writing when storing the pen nib down. I have also 'tossed' it into my purse with no leaks or writing issues as a consequence. I prefer to write with the cap off the end of the pen. When the cap is on the back of the pen (posted?) the balance is awkward. I am not used to having to refill my ink, and I am surprised at how often I am refilling. I didn't think I wrote much, but have refilled about every week. Perhaps I either did not fill it up all the way or the amount of ink my pen contains is a smaller reservoir? I have not used the cartridge that came with it, only the bottled ink. The bottled ink color sampling is well varied, with many colors both light and dark. When the package arrived, it was packed very well, protecting the products contained within the parcel. Being my first fountain pen, I cannot compare it with other pens, but this is a good pen. Pretty, functions adequately and is well priced and good for beginners. You can learn how to properly use one and get to know what you like and don't like about this style to better choose your next one without having to spend a lot. I liked it well enough and will upgrade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for First-Timer As a newbie to fountain pens, this package was a great way from me to be introduced to the various inks available. The Metropolitan Pilot is very newbie friendly, easy to use and maintain. The Rhodia pad was such a great bonus, as I had never had one before. The paper is great for practicing with my new pen. I was so excited about this package that I bought one for my friend also. She loves it just as much as me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My First Fountain Pen! I recently became obsessed with fountain pens and wanted to make sure my first purchase would be well worth it. The Goulet Pen Company provided all the videos and information I could ever need to help me make that decision! Plus, they even offered a "beginner's set" that made it easy for me to get started. Thank you - I'll definitely be ordering more in the future!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent starter set I picked this up because after buying a Pilot Metropolitan in medium I also wanted to pick up a fine one. Since I am new to the world of bottled ink, I enjoy getting the random sample pack because it lets me test ink I would have never selected otherwise. On top of that I figured this was an excellent way to test Rhodia paper as well. The ink samples are fun and the pen is wonderful. However, I am deducting 1 star for the Rhodia pad. It is not evenly cut or perhaps unevenly bound. That's something I don't think is acceptable from a company like Rhodia which charges a fair dime for their products. The paper itself works nicely for fountain pen. Beyond that, for me personally the format is less than ideal as it is really only good for writing on one side of the paper, which to me is wasteful. So I either end up with a lot of loose pages or just one sided writing. To try Rhodia I would suggest a ring bound or a bound notebook instead of the pad. Still, a great kit for a beginner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I love my new pen and the catch on their part of an error in my order. I got an email from them acknowledging the error and a solution before I had a chance to contact them. A really good company.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Everything is great but the pen. I was very pleased with the samples I got and the notebook is top shelf but the pilot metropolitan is a piece of junk. I am not sure what needs to be done to make that thing write without skipping, but I tried everything in my arsenal and ended up throwing the garbage pen in the trash where it belongs. Buy a Lamy or TWSBI and enjoy writing.
