I wanted to lovw this pen. Especially given the Pilot reputation, and how incredible my other Pilot pens perform. This one however, is a hard pass for me. Its so scratchy, and inconsistent with any ink i put in it. It’s frustrating to write witg at all. So long writing sessions are completely out of the question. Now, I’m certain that too much time has passed to have it repaired or replaced. This is probably my biggest regret purchase of 2025. :(

I think it's worth it

I love this pen in a fine nib. I bought it before I discovered Goulet Pen Company, and recently realized I hadn't reviewed it anywhere. Although this pen is on the pricy side compared to the Custom 74, it competes well in the gold nib with piston category, which is what I wanted. That it's a demonstrator is a plus for a pen you can't open to check ink levels. The piston is smooth and the whole pen has been reliable. It's a workhorse pen that's a joy to write with.

So first let me say that I am new to fountain pens, having only used one drugstore cartridge style one before that was a nightmare. That being said, so far I am thoroughly pleased with my new custom heritage 92 medium nib. I specifically wanted one that was a piston style filler, and have found that the mechanism is solid and easy to use.After trying some iridescent ink, I used some warm soapy water to help clear everything out, and that soap seams to have washed out some of the lubricant on the piston seal, so now there is s little more resistance when cycling the piston, but everything still seems to work fine.Writing with the pen is quite enjoyable. The nib glides smoothly on the paper, and on most papers with mild pressure will leave lines similar to an UNI-ball Elite Vision with 8mm ball. You can slightly vary line width with writing pressure, but it is a very small amount. The ink chamber holds a good amount of ink, probably enough to 3 or 4 days of pretty significant use. I picked the clear version because I love seeing the inner workings of things, but from a practical standpoint, it has also proved helpful when flushing out to a new ink to make sure all of the old stuff is completely purged, as you can see not only the ink reservoir, but also the entire feed. The pen is made mostly of plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap. I partly picked Pilot because they are a brand I am familiar with from other writing implements, and felt like they wouldn't make a bad product. I picked the medium nib because I read that Japanese nibs tend to be finer than other manufacturers, and I wanted a bold, robust line. As mentioned above, the writing is similar to an UNI-ball Elite Vision with 8mm ball. You can try one of those for $2.50 and get the idea before making the plunge on this guy. The only reason that I put the Value and Quality and "High" and not "Very High" was the price point. It is a well made pen in my opinion, and I enjoy it very much. I'm just not sure if it's a $240 pen. Though if I lost or damaged this one, I would likely buy another, so take that for what it is, lol...

Nice demonstrator

I am enjoying my Pilot CH 92 demonstrator with a medium nib. The pen is easy on the eyes and easy to use. It makes me happy to be able to ink up and see the amount of ink in the pen.

Good Writer

A very good light weight pen. Might be a bit on the small side for people with large hands. I prefer to use it it posted because I find it too short and not as comfortable without posting. I have the broad and I have to say that it does use ink much faster then if it were a F or EF so keep that in mind if you want to write for long periods of time. I just inked it up with Diamine Purple Dream and I find that it is a very wet and smooth writer. Definitely less scratchy then my TWSBIs but not as comfortable to hold. I have both the VAC700R and the TWSBI 580L and I find those two pens much more comfortable to hold during long writing session. The TWSBIs also feel like they are of higher quality in my hands when I am holding them because they are heavier and have more of a heft to them when you are holding them in your hands. Even looking at them side by side without knowing the cost, the TWSBIs look more expensive then the Pilot Custom Heritage 92 but the Custom Heritage 92 beats the TWSBIs hands down in terms of smoothness of writing and it feels less scratchy and has less feedback when you are writing with it.

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink?

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.

How do I clean this fountain pen?

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
