Goulet Brass Sheets (Set of 2)

This pair of 1"x2" size .002" thick brass sheets are ideal for flossing between the nib tines on your fountain pen to keep your ink flowing smoothly. Use it periodically when you're cleaning your pen to clear out crusted up ink or lodged paper fibers from your nib.

The brass sheets should be enough to last you quite some time if you're careful. The brass is soft and can be bent fairly easily, but when that happens you can use a pair of household scissors and cut a small sliver off the end to reveal a fresh new edge to your brass. The reason the brass is so thin is so that it will easily fit between your tines without causing any pressure that would misalign the tines. Brass is the ideal material used for flossing nibs because it's softer than any other metal used for making fountain pen nibs, so it won't cause your nibs functional harm. There is a potential for the brass to scratch a nib with a colored coating on it (such as the Lamy or Monteverde Black nibs), so be careful when you're using it on nibs like these that you don't touch the brass to the nib surface.

To use a brass sheet on a nib that's installed on a pen, insert the corner of the brass into the slit of the nib on the opposite end of the tip. For most nibs, there will be a hole in the middle of the nib face where you'll insert it, but some nibs don't have a hole (like Lamy, for example). Slowly and gently drag the brass sheet towards the tip of the nib, making sure to keep the brass between the tines as you go. Be careful not to jam the brass too far down into the nib, as you will hit the feed if you do that. Try to keep the brass pretty shallow in the nib. Once you've reached the tip, the brass will be tighter in the nib as nibs are designed to touch at the tip. Once you've pulled the brass all the way down through the slit, you are all set. You're welcome to repeat it as many times as you feel necessary. You can do this with an inked or uninked pen, but in general it's best to floss your nib during your pen cleaning process, and flush it out after flossing.

To use brass sheet in a nib that isn't installed in a pen, do the exact same method as above, but on the underside of the nib instead of on top. Flossing with brass sheet is also a good practice if you're doing any kind of nib smoothing, to remove any small metal particles from the nib.

Goulet Brass Sheets (Set of 2) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 90.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from After a loupe, easily the best tuning tool for fountain pens Whether you buy many fountain pens or a few this is a no-brainer tuning tool that really should be the first thing you buy after a good loupe or possibly before. It allows you to make very fine, effective and safe adjustments to even 21k nibs without destructive consequences such as marring the nibs or over-correcting the tines. You need not be an expert or advanced to get hugely satisfying results using this - that dry, hard-starting disappointment can very likely be adjusted to flow well with these brass sheets and a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the Goulet staff for thinking to provide these!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very handy to have around Great for flossing the tines. I find that when I write a lot on crappy paper, the nib collects a bunch of fibers that eventually cause flow issues. A couple of passes with the sheet and all fixed. Also, I had a cheap pen that was suffering from some skipping and flow issues but a couple of passes with the brass sheet helped create a bit more space between the tines and fixed the issue. Now it's loaded up with Noodler's Bay State Blue and writing like a champ!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheep and easy to use I was lucky enough to receive some vintage pens from my Grandmother recently. I wanted to get them to function again and was having a lot of problem with lnk flow. They are 30 and 60 year old pens so, their was some dried ink that would not break up. After flossing with the brass sheet they are writing like new again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indespensible I reviewed the pen tuning kit that comes with these brass sheets but I wanted to cover these sheets separately. After getting Goulet's Pen Cleaning Package Set and cleaning some neglected pens with dried ink, I found the ink channel in the feeds still filled with gunk after repeated soaking in flush and rinsing. The groove is very narrow and difficult to clean. I was amazed at the gunk that came out when I ran the corner of the sheet down the length of the groove. A quick dip in a vial of pen flush and rinse and the feed was like new. I have nothing around the house that would have fit in this groove, as it is only 4 or 5 mils wide and deep enough to trap the ink residue. I also used this to clear the tines in the nib. The Goulet lighted 15x loupe showed the groove very well and I could tell when it was cleaned out. Using canned air quickly blasted away the rinse water from feed. This is a must have for serious pen feed cleaning!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST-HAVE for fountain pen owners Used it recently to floss the 1.1 mm stub nib on my TWSBI Vac 700 after its ink flow was skipping because of clogging particles between the tines. A few swipes and it was writing as good as new again. Every fountain pen user should have brass sheets for this purpose. This micro-fine brass will not scratch or harm your nibs if used as directed. Brian G's excellent videos take the guesswork out of using pen tuning equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brass Sheets I've wanted something sufficiently thin yet rigid to get between the tines of some overly tight nibs. These are perfect for the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been searching for these a long time... Ever since I've started collecting fountain pens, I knew I had to own these, but living overseas, I was a bit reluctant at first. Now I'm so glad I ordered from the Goulets, it will not be my last!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Life for Pens I have several pens that seemed to dry out quickly. I used these sheets with cleaned nibs and the pens wrote like new without skipping.
