CursiveLogic Workbook

An intelligent new way to teach (or learn!) cursive. CursiveLogic is a handwriting workbook designed to help you learn cursive - you can use this as a teacher or parent to help a child learn, or use this yourself as a self-paced workbook to learn (or re-learn) how to write in cursive.

CursiveLogic is different from other handwriting methods because, instead of relying on rote memorization, CursiveLogic relies on the inherent structure of the cursive alphabet. The CursiveLogic instruction method contains two key features:

Four foundational shapes underlie the entire lowercase alphabet. Rather than teaching the letters alphabetically, CursiveLogic organizes the lowercase alphabet into four groups based on the shape of the initial stroke of the letters and teaches all of the similarly-shaped letters in a single lesson. Letters are also taught in a specific order that reinforces the pattern. By teaching all of the similar letters together, CursiveLogic captures the natural synergy of the alphabet itself, allowing each letter in the series to reinforce the proper formation of all the others.

CursiveLogic captures the flow of cursive by teaching all of the similarly shaped letters in a connected string rather than as individual letters. CursiveLogic’s letter strings teach students to connect letters from the first lesson, allowing students to internalize the flow of cursive handwriting even before they have learned all 26 letters.

CursiveLogic also uses visual and auditory cues to reinforce the shape patterns:

Theme colors — Each shape string has a color that reinforces the formation of the basic common shape.

Verbal task analysis — Students learn a simple, rhythmical chant that describes the path of the writing instrument as the letter shapes are formed. The process of verbally describing a motor task while performing it aids the acquisition of new motor skills.

And CursiveLogic is fun! Students young and old love tracing and writing our shape strings. CursiveLogic is the only handwriting curriculum that has an “element of fun” that comes from the alphabet itself. No cartoon characters, songs, or gimmicks needed!

As of Dec 2017, the Cursive Logic workbooks have been updated. The paper quality has improved to be more fountain pen friendly, and the format has been changed slightly to break out the different lessons onto different days. Cursive Logic is getting more of their workbooks into schools and this structure better accommodates that. You can still self-pace your own lessons, of course!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intuitive, simple method I am so happy to see Goulet carrying CursiveLogic. I used this to teach cursive to my child this past year and will be using it again this year. I appreciate that this program treats handwriting as an independent discipline, not tied to phonics or spelling lists, making it appropriate for any age. Since it is spiral bound, both "lefties" and "righties" have no problem using the pages. A dry-erase page makes repeated practice possible to reinforce hand movements. Additional practice pages to print at home are available to CursiveLogic newsletter subscribers with copywork material of quotes and historical documents like the Declaration of Independence, Kennedy's Inaugeral Address, and Gettysburg Address. Cursive Logic has become my choice for teaching cursive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for kids! I bought this workbook for my 10-year old son. He wants to learn cursive, so he can read letters and cards from his grandmother. :-) He's a lefty, so I bought him a Preppy with an extra fine nib and Noodler's quick-drying ink. The CursiveLogic workbook has been great! I work with him through the first couple of pages on new letter shapes, and then he does the rest on his own. He's about a third of the way through the workbook and is learning quickly. It's very intuitive and easy for him to follow. I'm extremely happy with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great teaching aid or refresher Through elementary, middle, and high school I have always been told I had great handwriting and that my penmanship was noteworthy (no pun intended). Sadly post college, I have found myself printing more often than not and the only time I would write in cursive is to sign my name (which was still a strange amalgamation of printing and cursive). In an effort to return to my previous cursive style, I chose to re-teach myself the art of cursive writing. This book uses small steps and repetition to easily allow the student (in this case, me) of any age to learn proper cursive writing techniques. The content of the book is fabulous and because it is spiral bound in a landscape format, it is easy for both left and right-hand writing. There is however one huge downside to this book: the paper quality. While it is heavier weight paper than your standard copy paper, it is very absorbent (definitely NOT fountain pen friendly) and creates a ton of feathering and bleedthrough. At first I tried using a medium nib (which when writing appears like a broad or extra-broad) and quickly found that to be a mistake, as the ink bled through 2 sheets (4 pages) of the book. Eventually I changed pens, using an extra fine nib (which actually provides better practice for tracing and writing and limits the feathering [not so much the bleedthrough..]). As mentioned, with the extra fine nib, bleedthrough was still present but not quite as bad as with a medium nib. Overall this book is a great, classic teaching tool, highly recommended: so long as you don't use a fountain pen... Because of the unfriendly nature of the paper to fountain pens, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back to basics I am naturally left handed but I was forced to write with my right hand at school. I am now retired but I still pick up a writing implement instinctively with my left hand. I needed a basic book on how best to write. This is definitely it. The writing is beautiful. My writing isn't beautiful or quick yet. However I do feel that I am on the right path and it's getting better every day

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Simple and Intuitive! The whole program is very easy to follow and extremely effective, relearning cursive is SO easy with this! The only thing I found wrong was that the paper was a little easy to bleed through, but not too much by any means.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome book Bought this book a week ago to test and see if I could use it with my children. Its a great starting book to just get to writing. Lots of practice in the various ways to connect letters. Word of caution. While this is FP friendly, my 1.1 TWISBI stub feathers slightly on this paper. Not bad, but enough I notice it on here and not my other FP friendly paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, great copybook! I bought this copybook to help me re-learn the basics and unlearn bad habits I have picked up over the years. It is very easy to read, easy to use, and breaks down cursive writing to basic movements. If you are learning or teaching cursive, or like me and re-learning, this book is a must-have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great review book A friend got me is boom to re-learn cursive and to work with my Boyz on it. The layout is simple, intuitive, and WAY easier than what unlearned as a kid. If you're looking to refresh your cursive, to relearn, or to teach someone, this is an excellent tool
