2ml sample of Jacques Herbin Shogun shimmering fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial. This is a black ink with red and gold shimmer/sheen.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

So good

I only bought a sample, so can't comment on price. Ink is a very dark purple. It looks black when dry. The gold sparkles are noticeable on every stroke but does not clog my medium nib TWSBI ECO. It works well on cheap paper - i.e. low to very low feathering. It feels slick when you write, almost like an oil. It is an excellent ink and I plan on buying a bottle as soon as I can get it by the wife.

Love it!

I need to buy a larger bottle of this ink. What more can I say.

Subtle in writing; lovely metallic in swatches

I don't really use black ink, since discovering the wonderful world of fountain pens. It's far too utilitarian, basic, and thus (for me) depressing. But this hue is technically a crazily deep brown tone, which makes it warm at its base. And the red and gold shimmer is such an arresting combo (especially in large swatches) that I felt confident I'd enjoy it.And I do! It writes beautifully- for something so particulate-rich, whose label includes a warning to clean the ink from your pen often (read: it likely stains), it didn't clog my Creaper in the slightest. The experience of writing with this ink was smooth as silk.Note: I got this (as most of my inks) as a sample. And when you get a shimmer ink sample, you never know if the sample is reflective of how much shimmer you'd get in a bottle. It all comes down to how well the seller agitated the bottle before they divided it into sample containers. So with all shimmers, but especially this one, your results may vary. The attached photos were swatched on Clairefontaine 90gsm paper and written on Yamamoto Cosmo Air Light 75gsm paper, using a Noodler's Creaper fountain pen with a steel flex nib.

Jacques Herbin Shogun Ink

I really, really like this ink. The flow is great, the shimmer stays in suspension better than most. Best of all - after it has dried the shimmer doesn't just rub off as with many shimmers so it's fine for addressing envelopes. Also, and this is just my veiw, the shimmer doesn't take over and look 'cheap' - it just accents the writing.

Ninja Sparkles

Flows well through the pen I am using. I think the company should have called the ink 'Ninja'. It is almost black and the glitter is subtle- ninja like.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.
