2ml shimmering blue fountain pen ink sample of Colorverse Cat in a labeled plastic vial.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

Subtle Shimmer, Nice Color

Looked nice (tried in an EF and a M), definitely would not go below a medium if you want to see the shimmer. The shimmer itself is very subtle, but still gives a pop regardless of the paper (I used it on copy paper with my EF for notes). Seemed to clean easily enough, the shimmer also seemed to readily move back into the ink with minor agitation (rolling, gently inverting). I would recommend if you're looking for something fun that can pass for professional without effort.

Be very careful in demonstrators

Shimmer is subtle. Color is true to what's shown in swab. Ink performance was fine until I went to clean it. I put it in my Pelikan M205 demonstrator because Pelikans are generally easy to clean, as the nib section screws right out and you can force lots of water right into the pen with either a bulb or blunt tip syringe. Inked it on Friday, went to clean it on Monday. No problem with the shimmer, but the ink itself left a pink-reddish stain in the pen barrel even after a normal cleaning routine of repeatedly syringing water into the pen body with the feed removed, which is normally more than sufficient. Then I used dish soap. No change. Now I've got it soaking in undiluted Goulet Pen Flush and we'll see if that cleans the stain out.

Purrfect Blue

This is a great shade of blue (roughly cobalt) with just a hint of shading and shimmer. The glitter is quite sparse, not always visible unless you look at your writing in the right light. As such, your feeds won't clog as readily as other shimmering inks. I didn't get smudging, bleedthrough, or feathering on any of the papers I tested this on, though it does dry a little slow so if you are a southpaw your experience will likely differ. Overall, I like this ink quite a bit: it's a great shade for a professional environment but with a subtly playful personality.

Glitter Bomb

This is exactly what it says it is. the color is a nice medium blue and the sparkle is amazing. Shows up through and through with a swab on Tomoe River paper. Writing with a pen is far more subtle but you can see it. I use a fine nib so it's limited.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.
