Nib and Cap

Great pen, writes terrifically well. The issues with my pen are the nib width and cap. The medium nib comes in at around 0.8 - 0.9 mm according to my measurements, which is wider than mediums that I experience. The cap is a slight bit loose. My existing Legacy 2 pen, which I bought new years ago, is a tight cap and a narrower medium nib. Goulet, as usually, is responsive and great to deal with.

Pleasantly Surprised

This is my first ever Sheaffer pen. I wouldn't have even considered this brand if it hadn't been for Brian's spotlight during the Q & A podcast; good job, Brian 🌟.
Only a few modern pens have inlaid nibs. The Pilot E95s, and Pilot Silvern, are the only two modern mainstream pens come to mind, besides this Legacy. I like to tinker, and disassemble pens for thorough cleaning, which isn't possible with inlaid nibs...but I have a bulb syringe, and avoid shimmer, sheen, iron gall, and some permanent inks in pens with non-removable nibs, so...crises averted.
I don't use specific fountain pen friendly paper, ever. Notebook paper and regular copier paper will have to do, because forms and documents requiring signatures don't get printed on "special" paper, either. If the pen & ink combo doesn't perform satisfactorily on "regular" paper, it becomes very limited in its applications. Having said that, I inked up the Legacy with the Coffee Scented Brown ink, and...discovered utter dissatisfaction with the result. The ink smells great, but bleeds through the page, and ghosts on the page below. Don't even think of writing on the back of the paper! Drained and rinsed the pen right away, and refilled it from my 1,000 ml bottle of Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue, and voilà, the result was perfect. It's a Medium nib, so it's a pretty thick line of ink on the paper, but that's normal for a nib of that size. The nib is stiff, with only minimal tine spread, but it actually feels smoother than my Silvern's 18k gold nib (which is just as stiff, BTW). The weight/heft of the Legacy feels just right, and the arguably most important dimension (grip diameter) is perfect at 11mm. The Legacy's fit and finish are perfect, the logo and branding are underwhelming. This pen is the antithesis of "flagship pen", and more like a de-badged Toyota Camry XLE: the perfect blend of performance, utility, comfort, and reliability, while hiding its capabilities under an unremarkable exterior.

Great pen, nib is not a traditional western

I like the size and weight of the pen. It is great in the hand. The inlaid nib, while beautiful, is listed as but is really more of a ,

A pen for life--optimistically

I bought the original of this model as a gift to myself upon my graduation from high school. As I recollect, $35 for an allowance extravagance. Forty-eight-years ago. My important undergraduate papers all were drafted in my hand with this pen.
Here it sits on my desk, that very pen. I seldom use it today: my writing/drawing style over my career moved out of necessity to flex pens, but occasionally I pick this one up again, --maybe out of esprit of pure nostalgia. For all of the pens I've worn out over the decades, this one never fails, is reliably stalwart, aside my neglect. Quick dab with my tongue, and it springs instantly into life. That Sheaffer never caved to offering a universal convertor to fit this pen has been my single gripe. PEN-INK-PAPER is a triumvirate! All three must work in consort. Over time I've shifted to other pen makers so to collect all three qualities in one package. But for consistency I've not owned a better pen than this model Sheaffer.
Apologies, Goulet Pen: I'm not due for a replacement. Together, we aim to go the distance. Best, C

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Sheaffer ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
