Rated 5 out of 5 by from Closer to Grey I tested three Noodler's inks: Black, Heart of Darkness and Dark Matter. Black was clearly the "blackest" of the three followed by Heart of Darkness with Dark Matter having a noticeably grey undertone when viewed side by side. They all appear black when viewed separately. Black seemed to have the longest drying time followed by Dark Matter with Heart of Darkness drying almost immediately. Black and Heart of Darkness seemed to have little feathering with Dark Matter displaying just a little more feathering. Just FYI, this is a work pen and I use cheap paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vintage Style Black The name and story behind its creation got my attention first. Although the ink didn't make a huge impression on me when I first tried it, I've gradually come to like Dark Matter more and more. These days the fashion is for super dark blackety-black inks that look like a hole in the page. To my own surprise I find myself preferring the cool slate gray-black of Dark Matter. This has become my favorite ink to use in my black Bexley America the Beautiful, which is really a modern near-copy of the classic Wahl-Eversharp Equipoise. A vintage style ink for a vintage style pen just seems right. It's no mere nostalgia trip, though. It's well-behaved in all respects and water resistant too. Hard to beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great everyday ink! Bought this to load up in the Noodler's Konrad pen. I use both the Dark Matter and Black by Noodler's and find them both superb for everyday use. The Dark Matter feathers more on cheaper papers and bleeds more than Noodler's regular Black. However, on nicer paper (Clairefontaine, Moleskine, etc.), I prefer the Dark Matter with the Noodler's flex nib pen. Creates wonderful variation of line and subtle shading with a bluish grey cast, and dries to a nice rich black. In short--flex nib, Dark Matter ink and quality white paper is a winning recipe for writing that seems to pop off the page. As a bonus, I find Nathan's label quite engaging on many levels. P.S. Goulet's customer service is top notch!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Throwback Thursday for Fountain Pen Ink I bought this ink because I watch Big Bang Theory and am married to a tech-science dude. The name just struck that nerd chord in me. Then there's the back story that sold me on the bottle. The Noodler's Dark Matter ink, although a replica of a circa WWII ink formulation, performs better than what I remember of the 70's Sheaffer fountain pen ink. The Noodler's Dark Matter does feather slightly and does have some variation in depth of color on the page. These are what give the ink the authentic feel of a replication of an old ink formulation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn't play well w/watercolors; nice for writing This is a very nice dark black ink. I love the name! However, although it is described as water resistant, you should test it before washing over with watercolor. In my sketchbook tests, the ink in the bottle I got bleeds a fair bit when touched by even a light wash. So I won't use this particular color in my sketchbooks anymore. I am guessing the only Noodlers inks that don't run when subjected to watercolor washes are the bulletproof ones. For regular writing of letters and on journal pages that will never be exposed to moisture, it's lovely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great balanced ink As soon as I received this ink, I filled my al-star, and was pleased with the improvement from my previous ink, noodlers blue-black. Even though it is EF, the pen now writes smooth (unlike before). Flow is no longer an issue. Nib creep minimal to nonexistent. Dries better too, after only 5-10 seconds a dry finger does not smudge at all and a moist finger smudges very little. This ink does feather and show through a TINY amount in my Lamy EF nib (on cheap printer paper). However, because of the smoothness, I can now write faster, which eliminates most if not all feathering. The color is a pretty neutral black, doesnt separate on paper towel either. Because of this successful mix of useful characteristics, it is now my main work ink.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made things right! I'm a noob when it comes to fill pens. I bought a Noodler's ahab, and used indian ink to fill it up. Not a very good idea. The two were a bad match. Through some research, which I with the benefit of hindsight should have done before filling the pen up with ink, I found out that these pens need a water based ink. So I bought Noodler's Dark Matter Ink. And so now, lo and behold, my pens are writing and drawing like a charm. The only negative thing I can say about this ink is that it's not a good combination with water colours. I sometimes use water colours to colour my drawings, and when i did the ink bled in out on the paper. But that's not how this ink is used, so I can't really hold it against it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dark Matter exist! I like this (very)dark gray ink, I also obtained some shading. Writing is very smooth. Since science is my work, I could not avoid to get this ink is named as one of the greatest astronomical mistery and linked to the Manhattan Project! There is "something" fascinating behind it. Maybe dark matter doesn't exist, but I have a small bottle of it on my desk! If you have friends fond of science (physics, astronomy) and fountain pens, this would be a great gift! Gouletpens people very efficient and very kind.
