Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Topkapi Amber

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Topkapi Amber Demonstrator is rated 3.8462 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good pen GREAT service I purchased the Ahab flex nib because it looked really cool. Could not figure out the mechanism to fill it. Called Goulet. After receiving video and verbal instructions, we decided the pen must be defective, so they sent me a new one, with return instructions for the old--note, they didn't charge me for the second pen. Once I got the new pen, I figured it out easily--then managed to get the old one working--so I sent the new, untouched one back. Love the pen; it's pretty darn smooth for a steel nib, and it's nice and substantial to hold in my aging fingers. But the service...that's over the top. Glad to have met this company.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from over rated, poor quality control poor quality, over rated. completely lack lustre experience. flow problems, cleaned, re-cleaned, adjusted, re-adjusted, leaked, not got much good to say about this product..when it wrote the nib was nice and flexi and gave decent line variation a little scratchy but useable..however the rest of the messing around with it just wasn't worth it..gave up..went back to the namiki/safari.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not meet expectations So I knew when buying this pen that it would require some tinkering and is not your everyday carry bullet proof pen. What I did not know was how bad the pen would smell! Its been 2+ weeks and it still stinks. Cant describe what the smell is but its not a pleasant one which makes writing with it not fun since you get a whif of the stench. It works but reqiures pantience to get the nib and feed in the right place. Nice how it all comes apart to clean easily. Biggest downside is the smell, I just hate using it for that reason.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good start to flexing and tinkering I want to start by saying that, overall, I really enjoy my Ahab. I read quite a bit about them before getting one, so I knew what to expect when it arrived. After giving the pen a thorough washing and drying, I inked it up and it worked great. As to flex, it's a lot of fun to play around with once I got over how hard I had to press down to get line variation. One of the nice things about that, though, is that it can be used as a regular writer if you want to. Very enjoyable pen, and can't beat the value.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amber Ahab. The good with the bad. I won't take up much of your time here, there are enough reviews of this pen. I like it for what it is, a cheap flex nib with great ink capacity. I bought a Goulet 1.1 to use with it since the TWSBI 1.1 nib replacements were out of stock, and overall the pen is ok. I had to play with nib and feed placements a bunch so I could get it to write smooth without any skipping but also without leaking ink and bleeding through the page. It seems ok now, but I haven't been using it. My biggest problem with it and the reason I'm not using it, is because it smells like it was made of pure vomit. It's incredible. I even washed it twice. It's almost impressive how the vegetal resin, which I assume is where the smell originates, smells exactly like puke. Someone should patent faux novelty vomit using this material, they'd get very rich.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from bummer! first off, i LOVE the noodles ahab. i bought a clear demonstrator 2 weeks before and its perfect. i was all set to match this pen with noodlers habanero ink.this looked like a perfect pen that i got but just couldn't get it to really flow, write, etc. i started messing with it and realized the nib was slightly bent. I'm sure this isn't a regular occurrence but i was bummed. i also purchased a konrad flex which was working incredibly but i couldn't get the cap on it so i pressed a little too much and bam! that nib bent. so i was all set up to and wound up learning a little about nibs, etc. i wrote to goulet and they answered fast of course. their customer service is incredible. i take responsibility for the konrad but the ahab nib was a disappointment. found out i have to order some nibs which were out of stock. but i will continue to buy noodlers pens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from lot of work I got this to mess around with. I wish it worked better out of the box. Only get this if you plan on messing around more than actually using. I do like the feel of the pen and may get a more normal nib for it. the flex is fun, but not something I think I will use a lot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from second ahab This is the second Ahab I own. It is a little more finicky than the first one, so I opened the vents with an exacto to adjust the ink flow - which is encouraged in the accompanying flyer. Now it flows properly. Moral of the story - each one is different, so do adjust.
