Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Zuni

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Zuni is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab: a pen to get used to After the reviews I wanted to try a flex pen myself. The Ahab Lapis was sold out, so I went for a Zuni. Quite dark blue. So: my first order at Goulet. Lightning fast shipping, only 2 weeks on the way to Europe. After I got it I first cleaned and reassembled it, but I needed to fidget 2 hours to get it working. I did not yet understand that you have to move the feed out to increase inkflow. Anyway: I learned a lot about pens this way (although it was my 13th fountain pen). Now it writes great. I do not flex heavily, but I like to do that now and then. When you don't flex it is a fine writing steel nib. Anyway: great pen (I even do like the smell) from a great online retailer! Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from goulet customer service my nib didnt write - out of the box - . the ink would fill, but no writing happened, except smatterings. i described the issue as best i could and they advised that I needed a new nib and sent it out immediately. this one works and is not splayed apart as the original one was. it writes fabulously now. no problems. it is sturdy and keeps ink well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from elegant and comfortable and practical!!! the amount of ink it holds even without the need to convert to an eyedropper is huge and lasts a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I Like About a Fountain Pen You can write novels about what I do not know about fountain pens. The Ahab Flex has to be the best one "out of the box" I have ever used. Using Private Reserve SuperShow blue ink it writes with the "just right" feel, wetness, flex and comfort. This pen is why I enjoy fountain pens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Flex Pen at a Great Price I needed an every day pen while my Lamy Safari was having the cap fixed. This is the first flex nib pen I've used and I enjoy writing with it. The size is right for me, filling is easy, and I have no problem writing left handed even though it is quite wet.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Jury is still out I was intrigued by this pen, and after reading the reviews, I bought one. I thought I knew what I was getting into and I love a challenge. When the pen arrived, I loved the look. I knew from Goulet Pens' videos that I needed to carefully clean the nib and feed, then let them dry. Once they were dry, I filled it with Noodler's Cactus Fruit Eel. I quickly determined that the nib and feed needed adjusting. With bright red ink all over my hands, I "fiddled" with them repeatedly, but I couldn't get the pen to write smoothly. I repeated the cleaning, then adjusting the nib and feed. Nothing. I then contacted Goulet Pen's customer service. Caitlin suggested that I try the heat process with the nib and feed. After watching Brian's video, I tried the heat process several times. This has helped significantly. But the pen still does not write smoothly. I am not going to give up on it just yet, though. I do see potential.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Have not inked this one yet as it is one mainly purchased to add to my Ahab collection. I am working on collecting all the different Ahab pens but I am sure that it will write as well as my Mandarin Yellow, Clear Demonstrator and Ahab's Pearl (White) which are my daily carriers and workhorse pens for all occasions and will be inked at some time in the future.
