Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Gray Fox

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Gray Fox is rated 4.9231 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Smooth writing right out of the box. Will take it apart just for the fun of it. My third order went in yesterday. My wish list never seems to get smaller even though I keep ordering from it. Alex, Katy and Greg did a superior job for me as I know they do for every one. Goulet Pen Company is a triple AAA quality organization that feels like a small local store even though they are hundreds of miles away. Quality people and quality products are what make Goulet Pen Company a major source for fountain pens and related items as well as a center for information.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really Smelly This pen is pretty good considering its price. The flexing is easy and writes smoothly. The only thing about this pen is how wet it writes. It bleeds through normal printer paper a feathers like a molting bird. It also smells bad. Like really bad. I think the pen is so cheap because they made it out of this cheap smelly plastic. The smell this pen emits make s it almost unusable to me. I hope that the smell will fade away over time. Then this pen will be well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ink on your fingers = fun You will get ink on your fingers fiddling with this pen, but that is what it is designed for. These pens are designed for the tinkerer, I will add that if you are using it with the intention of flex writing, make sure you have high quality paper, Rhodia is perfect for this. Yes, the flow was heavy straight out of the box and the ink I had feathered, but that was on cheap paper, most fountain pen inks will feather on cheap paper. Play with it, these pens are designed to be tweaked. After a day of adjustments I now have what works for me and I love it. The functionality of this pen will vary from person to person depending on the intended use. The bottom line is you should be able to adjust it to fit your writing style, as long as there are no serious mechanical flaws that cannot be adjusted. This one worked for me, now just waiting for the ink stains to wear off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from low cost/high performance I never used a Noodlers pen before but am experienced with the ink line.Let me first off say this,i don't believe these pens are for everybody. Some people want a pen to work flawlessly from the start and i don't blame them.I have these type of pens and really appreciate their quality.I bought this as more of an experiment or to appease my curiosity. My Ahab wrote fairly well out of the box but with a little adjusting it now writes surprisingly very good.I really like the combo of De Atramentis Sir Conan Dolyle and now Diamine Sunset.I dont mind the inexpensive packaging because its very creative.I like the picture on the info page so much that i might buy a cheap frame for it.The smell goes away after awhile and i'm really impressed in what they have done with this pen at Noodlers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from flexible writing My new fountain pen arrived! I thoroughly cleaned it and started. The effect is great! Right from the beginning. I can get 1.4mm width with not much effort. Looks really good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from green solution for writing OK, I admit I'm hooked on this pen. This is the third one I've ordered. They work much better than pens costing--not tens--but hundreds of dollars more. If I ever get a dud, I don't have enough invested in it to complain. This is much greener than buying a cheap plastic ball point and throwing it into the landfill, AND I get to pick my ink colors. What's not to love?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Once you go flex... I have a Konrad and an Ahab. Whereas Noodler's flex pens can be quite temperamental (I've had to return a couple of Konrads that I couldn't adjust for the life of me), my first Ahab is absolutely brilliant. Disclaimer being that it takes patience and tweaking to get the flow, nib adjustment, ink and paper all working in harmony. For me, it is well worth the effort. As Noodler's designs improve, I look forward to future releases. Now that I've been writing with flex nibs, I cannot go back to non-flex. Find myself doodling lines all the time these days. The variation and line with this nib is wonderful. I chose Black Swan in Australian Roses for this pen, because I read that the ink was designed for the flex. I write on Rhodia. The Black swan has excellent shading, and the deep reddish brown color is great for everyday, formal writing and notetaking, as well as sketching. It dries remarkably fast, and is well-behaved. The Ahab - Black Swan combo is now number one in the line up.
