J. Herbin Cafe des Iles (30ml Bottled Ink) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice brown, if one could write with it A lovely color and a fine price point. It apparently hates my little Reform pen, however, which behaved delightfully with other inks (Pelikan, Noodler's). Where the nib flowed gracefully in my graceless hand across the page with the others, this ink scratches, claws, and stops flowing altogether, requiring six shake-outs to complete a single journal page. It behaved that way on crummy paper, 35# parchment, 90g Clairfontaine, and the 90g unknown of my main journal. The paper even had a "clawed" consistency after writing. It did, however, dry quickly, with little or no feathering.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For color 5-stars, but 4-stars for perfomance This is the perfect shade of chocolate brown and the ink is well behaved on a range of papers, including lower quality absorbent papers (no feathering nor bleedthrough). But I have had less than desirable results in a Sheaffer 100 F, Noodler's Flex-nib Resin Piston Fill and Kaweco Classic EF. With these pens, the ink would simply stop flowing, and twice it occurred during meetings - ack! I have only been able to get consistent performance with my Lamy Safari EF. The beautiful color and no feathering make this a keeper for me, but I cannot trust to take it to a meeting again. LOL.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A beguiling but clogging dark brownish red (Original review:) I seem to have a peculiar susceptibility for J. Herbin inks. They seem almost always to have exactly the right degree of thickness and shading, and I love many of the colors. That is the case with this ink, whose charm for me is that it is a red that is sufficiently dark and unsaturated (brownish) that one can use it for correspondence and other quotidian writing tasks in which one does not want an alarmingly vivid color. ADDED IN EDITING: After further experience with this ink, I have lowered my rating of it from five stars to three, as I have found, after using it with several different pens, that it has a strong tendency to clog. Do NOT use this ink in a pen that you cannot dismantle! Even when I thought I had thoroughly flushed this ink out of a pen, I would find on dismantling it that the feed would release particles of solidified ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent ink Dries quite fast and is extremely feather resistant. It also dries with a flat look (no sheen). It does write with a slightly chalky feel but I actually like that. Don't leave it in a pen for weeks without using it as it is more likely than many inks to clog a feed (this can of course be cleaned quite easily). I wish it came in a 100ml plastic bottle like some of the other popular colours.
