De Atramentis Charles Dickens (35ml Bottled Ink) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gray Surprise! Like another reviewer--I received a sample from the Goulets after one of my typical over the top orders! I told my wife, who is an artist--I'm not going to like or use this ink--but, I filled my Edison Pearl (Persimmon Swirl if you care!), and I was sold and hooked--a full bottle is on the way!! working with the Goulet Pen Company is more than smart--it is a pleasure! But sticking to this link now--it is well-saturated, cover and flows well, and I think works in the office as well as a journal. Thanks to the Goulets for the gentle sale--with just a few ml's of ink!! well done--cannot go wrong with the ink, or Goulet! Frank

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not entirely gray I didn't actually buy this; the Goulets sent me a sample vial. I used the whole thing to eyedropper fill a Kaweco Sport. This ink is described as a gray, but to me it has a noticeable dull greenish tinge, at least if you look at it closely under a strong light. It could certainly pass for gray on a brief glance. Either way, it's very subdued, just dark enough to be easily legible. Supposedly this is not water resistant, but I always test inks to see how they will do. I found this one actually to be quite water resistant with my usual soaking in the sink test, and it didn't run when drying out either. Didn't try it with chemicals.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This ink has grown on me When I first inked my Pilot Birdie with this color, I was not convinced. The pen has a very fine nib, and while the color was well saturated and flowed beautiful, it was just gray. What did I need a gray ink for? But after a couple of days, I found there are many things in a day that I love this for. The ink looks almost like a lead pencil, but without the smearing. I adore it, and in my fine-nibbed pens, I can write on even the cheapest copy paper without even a hint of ghosting. This pen is going to be inked with this color for a very long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grey Green I had a sample of this and I loved it - but now it's out of stock! I like the idea of grey ink but in practice they can be a bit flat and dull (and at worst like a dilute black). This ink has sufficient ambiguity to keep it interesting - you couldn't call it green, but it's got plenty of tonal character! (My other favorite "ambiguous neutral" is Herbin "Cacao du Bresil"). Also by De Atramentis is "Fog Grey" which is is a nice companion, grey blue rather than grey green. Apparently this is the same ink as DeAtramentis "Cement", repackaged. I think I prefer "Cement" as a title as its more descriptive of the ink.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice color, just not my favorite So, I bought this because I don't have a need for true black (it's covered), and I wanted something that would stand out a bit. The color has a noticeable green tint, it has some shading, but it seems to feather a little too much on cheap paper (which is 98% what I write on). I do need to try it in more pens, as it's only been used in one so far, and I will keep it in rotation, but maybe reserve it for more special and specific uses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The name fits this ink! As a lover of lit, I had to order this ink sample (I also ordered William Shakespeare). I usually prefer "colors" in my fountain pens--Black Swan in Australian Roses, Fire and Ice, Viola, Torquay, Pelikan Violet, Emerald De Chivor--so this ink was a novelty to me because of its name. After receiving my awesomely packaged order from Goulet Pen Co.,I tried it in my Pilot Metropolitan fine for a day or two. It was a nice, understated but reliable ink for writing notes and journaling (see picture). As I wrote more with it and looked at it more closely, the ink appeared black but I couldn't decide if it had a mysterious green-gray hue to it so I tried it in a broader pen and really loved the shading I got (see picture). Playing even more with the ink and a no-name-nib and dip pen, I saw more of the gray-green hue that made me imagine Dickens strolling through Victorian London, the evening dappled by hazy street lamps and blanketed in the damp mist of the Thames. I highly recommend this ink to anyone who needs "traditional" colors for work as well as anyone who might be looking for an interesting color with some mysterious shading for gothic lettering. Really, anyone could use and love this ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite grey I received a sample of this ink in an Ink Drop, tried it, and immediately ordered a bottle. It is my favorite grey, and one of my top ten inks. It lays down wet, but doesn't spread. Drying time relatively quick. There is little to no ghosting, and no bleeding. If you like greys, buy this. You will not regret it.
