Great for a $20 flex |

My first flex fountain. Not as nice for Copperplate as a real calligraphy dip nib, but I also use this as a daily writer int he office. Ink can be a little trouble starting, and can drop off on fast, bold lines, but overall quite nice for a bargain pen.
The plastic DOES smell.. quite badly actually. It's a combination of feces and stale chocolate. It will go away, but if you must repeatedly wash all of the black body sections and leave them to air out for a number of days, preferably with a fan in front. My hands smell like the pen when I screw off the barrel.
Still, buy the pen. It's a good starter pen for anyone not looking for a wet noodle.

Take the time to flush it first with greatly diluted dish soap/water solution and she'll do fine. As much as I like the Noodler's Piston Flex pens I like the size of the Ahabs better. My first 2 Ahabs I was impatient and inked them first and got spotty performance. This one I flushed first and it works without a hitch. A super pen at a super price.

I used to draw with Noodler's flex pen, i think the Ahab is an improvement of the flex pen.

I like this pen a lot more than I thought I would. Yes, I had to dismantle and take the soapy toothbrush to it to get it to work, but work it does, starts easy, a very wet writer. I am quite taken with my Ahab, it just feels nice. I can't really flex it, since I'm left-handed, but still a keeper. And I actually like the smell. When it calms down a bit it's kind of like gingerbread.
I had heard many many good things about the Goulets and their service, and I was certainly not disappointed: top notch in all regards.

A good go-to flex-nib pen |

I think this pen is an excellent value for an everyday-use flex nib pen. It is a value-priced pen, so one has to keep that in mind and set expecations accordingly, but I think it meets and exceeds all reasonable expectations. I write with this pen all day long at work and find it to be a pleasure to use; however, it does get me some odd looks in business meetings, as it looks somewhat different from most fountain pens.
