Noodler's Heart of Darkness (4.5oz) with Free Charlie Pen
Product Code N19808
Noodler's Heart of Darkness is a popular permanent black fountain pen ink that comes in a 4.5oz bottle. The bottle has a built-in glass eyedropper so you can easily fill your eyedropper-convertible pens. This ink is popular for its very dark color and performance on absorbent paper, particularly its ability to resist bleed through and feathering. If you don't have a say in the quality of the paper you use, this ink is one of the best for you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smoothest blackest black ... except eyedropper Would be 5 star except for the eyedropper. Will get a sample vial to refill my non-eyedropper pens with. Now onto THE BLACK. This black is so black it's fun. It's smooth, possibly lubricated. I have used this black in both my Pilot Metropolitan M nib and my charcoal black Lamy Safari, with the black anodized nib, and the ink works so beautifully on both. This a great everyday carry ink because it'll write anywhere, on anything. It's VERY wet. My nibs are always soaked in black ink. Thus: black anodized Lamy nib is my favorite for this ink. This ink is so wet that the pen becomes incredibly smooth on almost anything. I have to cut myself off. Love this ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot to love about this set Opened this Christmas morning (2014), a gift from my stepson. What a nice surprise! He chose the ink after much research, and it really is a nice black. The other qualities will make it my check-writing and document-signing ink. I've wanted to try a Platinum Preppy for a while, and having one come with the ink was an added bonus. The pen came with .03 nib, which is a perfect width for me. I flushed the pen before using, but the nib seems to be clogging between uses. Will flush again and see what happens--it could be the ink's properties and not the pen. Other than that, I'm impressed at how well this inexpensive pen writes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have no desire to try any other black ink ;) It's black, very black, I'm sure it will be a pain to rinse out of the pen, but hey, every saturated color is like that, a small price to pay. I have tried it on the eyedropper-converted Platinum Preppy that came with it, and I don't know if I just got really lucky with the Preppy, or if it's just the ink that flows very nicely, but this pen-ink combination is definitely one of the smoothest I've ever experienced. I haven't experienced any feathering nor bleedthrough in the paper I've tried, and the dry time is pretty quick. Excellent ink, and I feel no need to try any other black ink at this moment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick Drying Black I tested three Noodler's inks: Black, Heart of Darkness and Dark Matter. Black was clearly the "blackest" of the three followed by Heart of Darkness with Dark Matter having a noticeably grey undertone when viewed side by side. They all appear black when viewed separately. Black seemed to have the longest drying time followed by Dark Matter with Heart of Darkness drying almost immediately. Black and Heart of Darkness seemed to have little feathering with Dark Matter displaying just a little more feathering. Just FYI, this is a work pen and I use cheap paper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noodler's Heart of Darkness I'll confine my review to the ink, since the pen has yet to be inked. I bought HOD as a replacement for Noodler's Polar Black in a Sailor 1911 with a medium nib. The ink is black. Even the white bits. There have been no issues with starting. Minor quibbles are that is can take a while to dry, especially on glossy paper, and that there is slight feathering on cheaper paper. Both issues are likely magnified with a nib that dumps more ink on to the paper. The nib feels slightly scratchier than with PB, but lubrication is not one of HOD's advertised properties. Very happy with the ink overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorites. Heart of Darkness has become the constant companion of my everyday writer (a Namiki Vanishing Point). It's even better behaved (flows evenly, not too wet or too dry) than classic Noodler's Bulletproof Black, and holds up well to time, spills, etc. I was looking for a blacker black, and this is it. Many blacks end up looking not-black-enough in fine nibs or after aging on the paper. Heart of Darkness is just black...not charcoal, not extremely-dark-grey, not blue-black, not kind-of-brownish...just black, regardless of what pen I put it in, what paper I write on, or how long it's been there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It was the name that attracted me first I initially bought the black document ink sample set looking for a black ink that would become my go-to. Heart of Darkness was among them. I loved the name and tried out immediately. I almost didn't test any of the other inks in the sample pack. Even after trying the other inks I kept going back to Heart of Darkness. So I purchased the 4.5 oz bottle. Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink flowed smoothly and dried quickly. Being left-handed that was an important aspect for me to look at. I really like the intensity of the ink. The fact that there was a preppy pen included was simply a bonus to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect black? I had to come back and edit this review. I spoke poorly of the bottle because I could not get a TWSBI Vac 700 down into it. Later I decided to use the eye dropper and load up the free platinum preppy pen for fun. For a cheap pen, this thing has a nice glassy slick nib. It writes flawlessly. For mass writing this is a champion! I'm quickly collecting a massive assortment of ink and pens but I always come back to this cheapo freebie pen and bottle. Probably my favorite ink of all the inks I've tried. It works every time i put the nib on paper "period"
