Goulet Pen Tuning Package Set

WARNING: Using an abrasive like Micro-Mesh to smooth your nib voids just about every pen manufacturer's warranty, so make sure you're only working on pens that are out of warranty, or that you're confident you will never need to have serviced by the manufacturer or returned to the retailer. It's best to practice on inexpensive pens that you don't mind screwing up and throwing away if things go bad.

Everything you need to tune/smoothe your fountain pens! Includes our Goulet Loupe, brass sheets, Goulet Grip, mylar paper set, and Micro-Mesh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have started with this, glad I have it now I've NEVER had a good experience with a Pilot pen, other than the Varsity. The nibs were always scratchy or ink didn't flow, even on a $70 Prera. I used the loupe to better see and align the tines on a $4 Pilot Vortex. It wrote better. Then I used the micro mesh to smooth the nib using figure 8s, and tested on paper often. After a while a pen that I had compeletly given up on came back to life! The Prera is likely ruined, because I used mylar paper on it first and was probably too aggressive. Start with this kit! Align tines first, micro mesh/est on paper after that, and only then go to mylar (which should be a last choice).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great to have I got this set a couple of days ago. Brian's tutorials made the sale, plus my 14+ year old Namiki Vanishing Point has gotten somewhat scratchy the last year or two (compared to my Waterman Carene and Lamy AL-Star). First I adjusted the tines per his video and that helped somewhat. But after several minutes with the micro-mesh and a few minutes with the 1 micron and then the 0.3 micron Mylar it really smoothed up and is great now. Glad to find the information on tuning the nibs and smoothing the tips. Thanks Brian for the great tutorials! Oh, the shipping was super too, always packaged perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from just what the doctor ordered!!! Has everything you need from the brass sheets to just get small paper particles from between the tines or metal particles after smoothing, to the mylar paper for light smoothing or finishing, to the micromesh for really rough nibs. But remember to use your new loupe before anything to make sure the tines are aligned before anything! As long as your careful, you can avoid the high cost of professional tuning!!! The brass sheets are the best if u use cheaper paper, because you can get all the particles out that get caught up in there inhibiting flow. Saved me some money when i had flow issues and was going to send it in.... just needed to floss the tines!!!! Great job goulet team!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good bargain for a complete set of beginner tools I really like the collection of tools Goulet has put together for beginner tinkerers. (Is that a word?) Anyway, I like that everything you need to examine and tune a nib is represented. With the directions you can receive from Brian in his 'how-to' videos, a good amount of time and money can be saved by those inclined to "do it yourself". This is obviously a 'beginners' set of tools, but for someone just starting to get into the hobby of fountains pens and is interested in smoothing or adjusting their own nibs, this collection of tools is a great starting point that includes everything you'll initially need. I think it's a good bargain considering the convenience of having it all in one package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great set I used everything in my tuning set, and have worked on the nibs of several pens, with mixed results. I'm still learning, but everything in the kit has worked well. The loupe took some getting used to (one has to bring it very close to one's eye, and the field of focus is tricky), and sometimes I wonder if a stronger magnification is needed. But I think this is a personal preference, and for most people the one in the kit is sufficient. I'm sure I'll be ordering more mylar and probably micromesh, as I continue to improve my tuning skills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yay!!! The tuning package set arrived this morning, and already I've tinkered with a couple of slightly scratchy nibs that are now buttery smooth. I also used the loupe to re-align the badly bent tines on my Lamy 2000 which I'd dropped on the floor and haven't been able to use for a couple of months. It now writes like new! The service was great as always. Just a couple of days from time of order to delivery all the way here down under. Thanks Brian for the instructional videos. It gave me the confidence to try out nib smoothing. Now I'll never have to shelve a pen as unusable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tools, great value! I enjoy restoring old lever fillers for myself, so am used to using the sort of items offered in this set. What you are getting here is an excellent value! The loupe is especially nice for the price. It will give you a very sharp, clear view of your pen. I also love the 0.3 mylar for making nibs glassy-smooth! Great job putting this set together, Goulets! Wow!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice This kit is very nice in helping smooth out some finicky pens. I have used the loupe to examine a couple different nibs that have been giving me problems, as well as the micromesh to smooth out some rough spots. The brass sheets are also great in cleaning out the area between the tines and making sure there isthe proper separation for capillary action.
