Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Black Permanent Ink I use this ink in my Lamy Al-Star (M). It lays down a very good line and writes smooth, wet and even. The Black is really dark and has almost no shading. I especially like that the ink becomes permanent on cellulose paper after a certain period of time and is resistant against water and several chemical solvents. I ordered this ink to my home in Germany and expected to get the depicted glass bottle. I actually received a white plastic bottle with the same printing on it which confused me at first. But meanwhile I like it. It can not break that easy if I drop it or during shipping. It may have been chosen for shipping reasons or because of the varying stock.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If only it were a bit smoother The ink outranks most blacks that I have seen - Pelikan, Parker, MB... However the ink seems too lack a little fluidity. I haven't tested the Eel version yet, but was impressed by the Cactus Fruit Eel, so I may suggest the Black Eel over this. However, the best quality of this ink is to consistently provide a deep black hue with a light sheen each time. There is the waterproof quality, which makes this my current staple black. Warning: The ink is more suited to nibs that are on the broader. The oil base of this nature, is often not the best on xf nibs, which seem to struggle to perform equally. Overall - Good (A star off for the smoothness of writing)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful ink, Wonderful service This is exactly the ink I was looking for: pitch black, wet, and even. It lays down a perfect line in my Lamy Vista (F). If you're looking for a true black, buy Noodler's Black. In terms of my shopping experience, this was my first time buying from the Goulet Pen Company and I have to say I had a wonderful experience. The shipping was very fast, the packaging was perfect, the customer service top-notch, and I even received a nice handwritten note from Brian. What a nice touch! Just goes to show the level of service and passion of this family-owned company. After my experience, I will definitely be a lifelong customer of the Goulet Pen Co.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ink! Just got this today and love it. I've used Parker Quink permanent black and blue black for many years because it writes so smooth and flows well in any fountain pen - it seems to be "self cleaning." But if water gets on it it will smear, and I found out recently that the Noodler's black is totally waterproof. I loaded it in my Lamy Safari, my wife's Safari, my Kaweko Sport, tested it with water. No smearing! It is smooth as silk and only bonds to paper. Now what I write will last as long as the paper it is written on. My Waterman Preface and my other Safari are next, then my old Schaefer Targa.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blackest Black I tested three Noodler's inks: Black, Heart of Darkness and Dark Matter. Black was clearly the "blackest" of the three followed by Heart of Darkness with Dark Matter having a noticeably grey undertone when viewed side by side. They all appear black when viewed separately. Black seemed to have the longest drying time followed by Dark Matter with Heart of Darkness drying almost immediately. Black and Heart of Darkness seemed to have little feathering with Dark Matter displaying just a little more feathering. Just FYI, this is a work pen and I use cheap paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Black: practically perfect I wanted a black ink for sketching that was REALLY black and flowed easily. And it needed to hold up to water colors once it dried. Noodler's Black is it. No feathering or bleed through on any paper I would use. Works great in a Lamy Safari with fine nib and dip pens when working at the desk. As a bonus, gives good results with a 1.5mm italic nib. Even my so-so handwriting looks good with that pen. I can understand why professional users would want large bottles of this ink. Of course, there was the usual fast delivery and secure packing that I always get from Goulet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A nice daily driver I've had a bottle for nearly a year now, and used it extensively for the first 7 months of that time period. The ink is clearly a black, but it shades to grey in some areas. Some people like this, but I find it irritating. Bad Black Moccasin, also by Noodler's, is more black through and through. This ink flows fairly well, somewhere around 6-8 on a ten-point scale. However, the high saturation leads to some long dry times (>60 seconds at times), and even after drying, some dyes lay on the surface of the paper, resulting in the ability for the ink to be smudged months after writing. However, these issues are not dealbreakers, and if you're in need of a decent black for a great price, look no further than Noodler's.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I must be the only person on the planet who doesn't like this ink Based on the rave reviews and recommendations for "the" black ink from pretty much everyone, I thought this would be a great one to own. Not a big fan of black ink to begin and this was my first bulletproof ink to try/own. Flow was good, didn't feather nor bleed through on Moleskine paper as promised. IMHO the color was not the blackest black in the history of black ink. The color reads as a very, very dark charcoal gray to me, especially when dry. I loaded it in several pens with different types of paper and it just didn't do one thing for me. I simply don't understand what the hype was all about and won't be using it. The bottle, however, looks nice beside my other Noodler's inks that I think are amazing.
