Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-jaku: Ink Review

Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku Fountain Pen Ink writing sample and swaps with bottle on desk type background and bright blue bits of abalone shell as accents

Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-jaku is a deep teal fountain pen ink part of Pilot's Iroshizuku ink line. It's a pretty face-value ink, as it doesn't hold many secrets beyond what you see. It's a great-flowing ink with rich teal color, so it's certainly worth a try, just don't expect anything extravagant.

Supplies Used:

Smear Test (Dry Time):

  • ~10 seconds – On the quicker side of things, it only takes about 10 seconds for this ink to dry completely.

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

  • Low-Medium – There will still be some faint lines leftover from what was once fully saturated, but it's certainly not meant for permanence.

Saturation:

  • Medium – There is some difference between the first and second swab but not a significant amount between the second and third.

Ease of Cleaning:

  • Moderate – Nothing particularly difficult about cleaning it out, but the darker blue and green pigments like to stick around for a few extra rinses.

Shading:

  • Medium – There is some shading that can be achieved with the right pen/nib, as there can be some variation in shade when writing.

Flow:

  • Moderate – While it's not gushing out of the pen, there is no issue with getting this ink to flow nicely.

Summary:

Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-jaku doesn't have any outstanding special properties, but it does have a bit more shading than some other teal inks and you may see a red sheen in some areas. It goes down easily on the page and it flows freely from your pen, so it shouldn't cause any headaches while in use. It's got a beautiful hue and is worth a sample test if you like any colors in the teal or turquoise range!
