Pilot Varsity Fountain Pen - Assorted 7-Pack, Medium is rated 4.64 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from My first fountain pen The Varsity was my very first fountain pen. As a lefty I never thought I could use a fountain pen, but for 3 bucks I was willing to try. I loved it and there was no looking back. For an inexpensive pen, it gives you a lot of the "Fountain Pen Experience", comes in a handful of cheerful colors, and isn't a worry if it gets lost. I keep one where every I might have had cheap ball-point before, and I hand them out to friends as a way to see if they'll like writing with a fountain-pen. When I see them carrying it around and guarding it jealously, I have an easy answer as to what sort of thing to get them for their next birthday.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pens Honestly, I thought, "How good could they really be at that price?", but these pens are brilliant They are lovely to write with and the colors are really perfect! Love the turquouise. That was up untial my 16 year old daughter stole my pens. Now, she too craves new pens and new inks on a regular basis. To make it worse, Goulet Pens is a fabulous company to order from. I LOVE the website. They put some much effort to give you loads of information so that when your purchases arrive, (wrapped with such care!) it meets or exceeds your expectations. Bravo Goulet Pens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, cheap, lovely ink colors. I could do without the giant Varsity logo, but that's about the only thing I dislike about these pens. These were my first fountain pens. I've added a few more to my collection, but I keep these at the office and come back to them constantly. I love the thicker, wet line, and the ink colors are saturated like whoa. As wet as the ink is, I've not experienced smearing (lefty!) or long dry time. The nibs write smooth like butter on Clairefontaine/Apica/Midori/even Moleskine and copier paper, and I have not experienced bleedthrough anywhere. I have more expensive pens that write less to my liking than these. They're an absolute pleasure--and I would definitely choose them over the Platinum Preppy, any day. My set of Preppies looks cute in my office cupholder, but I hardly ever reach for them with Varsities around. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Cheapo Pen The Varsity is much better than I would have expected for a $3 fountain pen. It writes smoothly, doesn't skip, and is just an all-around pleasant pen to use. It would be unfair to compare it to a really good fountain pen, but when compared to other pens you can get for a similar price...wow. It does lay down a fairly heavy line, but it doesn't bleed or soak through on regular copy paper. The blue (my favorite) is vivid and pretty, as is the purple. The black is very dark. As for red...it's kind of a dud. It dries to a wan strawberry. The fact that you can't disassemble is actually an advantage sometimes. My son wants to use a fountain pen at school, but I know he'd be unable to resist messing around with it and probably getting ink everywhere. (I can hardly resist it myself!) So it's a "safer" choice for him than a refillable pen. Also--if you feel like it, you can take the paint off the barrel with Goof-Off or nail polish remover. It looks pretty cool like that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best performance by an understudy... I echo all the positive comments made so far. My Varsities stay in the side pockets of my messenger bag, ignored most of the time. But when I find that I have forgotten one of my more uptown pens, of if I run out of ink unexpectedly, I have the Varsities waiting in the wings. They are the most reliable of any pen I have known. Even after sitting idle for months, unused and unappreciated, they always write the instant I ask them to. And they are very good writers, as others have described.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "Everyday" Pen It is frustrating that this pen works so much better than my Monteverde Invincia for "everyday" tasks. It writes smoothly and quickly on pretty much any paper. The blue is pretty dark. Seems to always start and works evenly on up- and down-strokes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Nice Surprise I had some of these pens in fine point when they first came out a few years ago. I did not care for them much at the time because they were too scratchy. Now that they have upgraded them somewhat and have them in medium points, I find them to be surprisingly smooth and useful. Glad I gave them another try!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Medium Nibs bleed through paper! :/ These write quite smoothly and are wet, so they don't skip much, but my prior experience has been with a fine-tipped LAMY Safari and I definitely prefer a fine tip to a medium! The medium tip on these pens means that the ink is always visible through my paper, which makes it hard to use both sides. My sister purchased a couple of Platinum Preppy Fine-Tipped pens and for a disposable fountain pen, I far prefer these, simply because they are available in the fine tip.
