Pilot Falcon Fountain Pen - Black/Rhodium, Soft Fine

The Pilot Falcon (previously known as the Namiki Falcon) is an iconic pen in the fountain pen world. It's most famous for its 14k rhodium-plated soft nib, which provides line variation when you change your writing pressure. This fountain pen comes with a soft fine nib and includes a Con-50 converter for bottled ink and a Pilot/Namiki ink cartridge in a pen case.

The softness of the nib is such that if you want to use it for daily writing you can, without having to flex it out. Though if you do want to showcase line variation, all you need to do is increase your writing pressure on the downstrokes and it's there for when you need it. Pilot doesn't advertise this as a "flex" pen, though it has that reputation in the fountain pen community. It most certainly provides distinct line variation, though you can overdo it, so just be cognizant of how far you're pushing it when you flex the nib tines.

The soft extra-fine nib is quite fine, and has a very toothy feel to it though it does provide the most dramatic line variation of all the nib options. The soft-fine has quite a lot of line variation, as well, with a noticeably smoother feel than the soft extra-fine so it's ideal as an 'everyday' pen. The soft medium and soft broad are quite smooth and enjoyable to write with, though the line variation is less noticeable on these nib sizes than the finer nibs. Pilot (and other Japanese nib companies) has a reputation for grinding their nibs finer than European brands. We've found that to be the case with the extra-fine and fine nibs, while the medium and broad nibs are more similar to European nibs. Check our Nib Nook comparison tool to see how the writing samples that Brian Goulet has done compare to other pen models.

The Falcon is made of black resin, a light material that polishes to a high gloss. The pen is trimmed with polished rhodium-plated accents, which really complement the black color nicely. The threads on the grip are subtle, and while your fingers may touch them while you're writing, it's not bothersome at all for most writers.

This is a slightly lighter pen than most at 19g, a noticeable difference from the heavier Pilot Metal Falcon. It's well-balanced with the cap posted or not. The screw-cap pushes on the back of the pen to post, and holds very firmly.

While the Falcon is certainly an investment, if you appreciate Pilot's quality and are looking for a reliable soft nib in a professional-looking pen, then you should give this pen a serious look.

Pilot Falcon Fountain Pen - Black/Rhodium, Soft Fine is rated 4.9524 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply excellent For 150 bucks shipped I think it would be very difficult to match the quality of this pen. The pen itself is a bit on the small side with a kind of an understated simplicity. It looks very businesslike. That's a good thing as the pen doesn't draw attention to itself. The thing that makes the Falcon shine above all others in its class is the nib. It's absolutely amazing! I went with the soft-fine and inked it up with Shin-Kai as soon as I got it and probably didn't stop writing for a hour. If you're looking at a $300 pen forget it. Get the Falcon and $150 in paper and ink and you'll be a lot happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great pen! The nib is one of the smoothest I've ever written with. I was afraid that, since it's a fine point, it might be scratchy or drag across the paper, but that's not the case at all. Although it does have some flex to it, you have to press pretty firmly to achieve it, so if you're really after that alternation of thick and thin strokes, this may not be the pen for you. (I do wonder, though, whether a broader nib might be softer.) I don't mind the light weight as I feel it gives me more control, nor do I think the black resin barrel and cap looks cheap. The design is simple yet elegant. I've enjoyed writing with it so far and feel that it will become one of my go-to pens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite If I were to start my collection from scratch all over again, I would pick this pen and likely never buy another pen. I have Mont Blancs, Edisons, Pelikans, Pilots, Lamy, Monteverde, Sheaffer, and the list goes on. By far, this is my absolute favorite pen. It writes like no other. The line variation is beautiful and shows off the inks' personalities and shading capabilities. I will have to buy another, only metal body. I like heavier pens as well. This pen is a bargain at the price. I never use the same pen 2 days in a row. This pen is the exception to my rule. I am so very glad to have purchased it. (I have used it with Iroshizuki Kon-Peki and Murasaki-Shikibu. Both are even more stunning with this pen! The shading is amazing!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent, expressive pen The Pilot Falcon in rhodium trim is an understated beauty of a pen. There's something attractive about the glossy black resin and the unassuming metal accents. This beauty extends to the hooded nib, which I noted was able to flex to a small degree, enough to produce a much broader line. That said, it does not enter wet noodle territory. The nib springs back into position fairly quickly after flexing, which is great for expressive writing. I inked the Falcon with Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo immediately and found that it could even exhibit the subtle shading of Tsuki-yo, which I couldn't produce with my other pens. Needless to say, I'm in love again with Pilot fountain pens. A pity then, that this was a birthday gift to my sister. I shall have to procure another for myself some day!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely scribbler An excellent pen for those who write small and have a light penmanship. The SF semi-flex nib creates beautiful line variations and flourishes (occasional flexing ONLY). Regular flexing will railroad the nib and turns it from an asian style fine line to medium writer. It is a very light pen -- some may prefer the heavier Metal Falcon. The combinations below works great for me for what I have on hand. On Rhodia paper: Aurora's Black ink Noodler's Air-Corp Blue-Black ink Private Reserve's Midnight Blues ink One ink I don't recommend is Noodler's 54th Massachusetts. It writes fat and wet, and stains the nib.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a omg pen! Well, I wondered why so many people loved this pen. I loved the way it looked but wasn't sure on the writing. It's my first fine nib. I normally use medium. But even people that have much more expensive pens say this is within thier top 3 or 4 pens they own. After getting mine and writing with it I feel in love with its fine writing style. Now I don't want to got back. My only complaint is the finish that bleeds finger prints and can get scratches or scuffs easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Been wanting this pen for a long time and it was worth the wait! It is very different and a joy to use even if you don't use the flex properties. A very enjoyable, precise writing experience with flair!
