Pilot Falcon Fountain Pen - Black/Gold, Soft Medium

The Pilot Falcon (previously known as the Namiki Falcon) is an iconic pen in the fountain pen world. It's most famous for its 14k gold soft nib, which provides line variation when you change your writing pressure. This Falcon comes with a soft medium nib and includes a Con-50 converter for bottled ink and a Pilot/Namiki ink cartridge in a pen case.

The softness of the nib is such that if you want to use it for daily writing you can, without having to flex it out. Though if you do want to showcase line variation, all you need to do is increase your writing pressure on the downstrokes and it's there for when you need it. Pilot doesn't advertise this as a "flex" pen, though it has that reputation in the fountain pen community. It most certainly provides distinct line variation, though you can overdo it, so just be cognizant of how far you're pushing it when you flex the nib tines.

The soft extra-fine nib is quite fine, and has a very toothy feel to it though it does provide the most dramatic line variation of all the nib options. The soft-fine has quite a lot of line variation, as well, with a noticeably smoother feel than the soft extra-fine so it's ideal as an 'everyday' pen. The soft medium and soft broad are quite smooth and enjoyable to write with, though the line variation is less noticeable on these nib sizes than the finer nibs. Pilot (and other Japanese nib companies) has a reputation for grinding their nibs finer than European brands. We've found that to be the case with the extra-fine and fine nibs, while the medium and broad nibs are more similar to European nibs. Check our Nib Nook comparison tool to see how the writing samples that Brian Goulet has done compare to other pen models.

The Falcon is made of black resin, a light material that polishes to a high gloss. The pen is trimmed with polished gold accents, which really complement the black color nicely. The threads on the grip are subtle, and while your fingers may touch them while you're writing, it's not bothersome at all for most writers.

This is a slightly lighter pen than most at 19g, a noticeable difference from the heavier Pilot Metal Falcon. It's well-balanced with the cap posted or not. The screw-cap pushes on the back of the pen to post, and holds very firmly.

While the Falcon is certainly an investment, if you appreciate Pilot's quality and are looking for a reliable soft nib in a professional-looking pen, then you should give this pen a serious look.

Pilot Falcon Fountain Pen - Black/Gold, Soft Medium is rated 4.4444 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Nib, Adequate Pen This fountain pen has one of the most amazing nibs I've ever used. It's very 'soft,' you could call it flexible but I wouldn't say it's a flex nib. It makes this pen a joy to write with, as the lightest of touches is all that you need. I haven't found an ink yet that doesn't work great in this pen, and I assume that's because of the special nib. That said, the pen does have its flaws. First of all, the pen is very light. It's easily one of the lightest pens I own. I don't mind that too much, but it's worth knowing that it's not a substantial-feeling pen. Also, the CON-20 converter that comes with this pen leaves a lot to be desired. I could never get it to fill completely. I now use an empty Pilot cartridge and fill it up with my own ink. This is easy and gives you a much larger fill than the converter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dream Writer This pen is simply a dream to write with. It glides across the paper, and as already mentioned, it is NOT a true flex, but a very soft writer. What this means is, that with very little pressure the pen is able to write smoothly. I didn't notice any real significance in line variation, but where the nib works wonderfully is when it comes to shading. There was no skipping at all. I must mention that I make it a habit to soak all the nibs of new pens - this allows for any oil, ink or other substances to free itself allowing for better ink flow. I've only inked it with Sailor Jentle Grenade which works great in this pen. The look of the pen is very understated - there is no bling or glitz. It has a very professional feel to it. Also as mentioned by a previous reviewer, it is a very, very light pen. It can feel a bit fragile if you are used to a more weightier fountain pen. This pen would make an excellent gift for a collector or executive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Falcon has landed. Thanks team the Namiki Falcon arrived safely last week all the way down here at sunny Hallett Cove South Australia, Thanks Greg Shelton for the careful wrapping. I have had a chance to write with it now and it performs just as advertised. No unpleasant surprises. The nib is springy and pleasant to write with, similar in many respects to the OMAS Arte Deco, I feel, but somewhat less expensive and more suitable for an "every day carry" I guess. It does get admiring looks though with its classic looks and shiney gold beak. Thanks again for your enthusiasm and good work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from almost perfect gorgeous nib on this pen. It has a very distinctive feel and gives a unique quality to your writing and drawings. The pen is very elegant too. Only criticism is that the nib tends to slip on smooth paper and has trouble getting going even mid sentence. This never happens with the Creapers. Also, the reservoir in the pen is very small and needs to be refilled often. I have run out in the field a couple of times .Ink flow is a little irregular.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to control My favorite nibs are my binder italics. I went for this one to try a flexible nib. I find it very hard to control. My handwriting is not the best and the flexible nib is too much for me to control. Its not exactly a noodle but the flexibility of the nib made it hard for me to make straight lines and fluid curves. I'll stick with the sharper edge of an italic nib. The pen fit and finish is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wet writer! Great value for money, the Falcon is one of my favourite pens. Does write a bit thicker than I expected a Japanese pen to write (ie. medium I think is equivalent to a Western medium) but love the bit of softness to the nib that gives a bit of flair to writing. Not a true flex pen though - don't buy this for the flex. Buy it for the lovely smooth nib that glides effortlessly over even the worst paper. Very happy, though in retrospect I would have bought the soft-fine (I have smaller hand-writing).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it!!! The pen arrived promptly, beautifully and securely wrapped. And inside...what a dream. I love the feel of my Namiki Falcon in my hand, and even more the smooth flow of the ink across all types of paper, even watercolour. It is my new favourite for sure. Thank you!!
