Noodler's Konrad Acrylic Flex Fountain Pen - Coral Sea

The Konrad Acrylic flex pen was introduced in early 2013 - it is smaller than the Ahab, but larger than the Nib Creaper. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a twist piston mechanism with a blind cap. The Konrad Acrylic is made of acrylic acetate.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, expect some variation in the pattern from what you see here. But hey, that just makes each pen unique!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Konrad Acrylic Flex Fountain Pen - Coral Sea is rated 4.7692 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Pen to Write With My previous Noodler's pen was a Creaper, and while I liked that pen (particularly its daintiness), I thought I would try the Konrad, particularly as the colors were so arresting. I settled on this color scheme quickly, and when I got the pen I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it is. It has a pearlescent sheen to it. It's large, but not too large to write with comfortably. Even though it came with the free non-flex nib, I have kept the original nib on it and have been enjoying my writing experience with it. I'm sure I will use the other nib at some point, but for right now, I'm happy with the original nib. I would recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So beautiful! I received my Coral Sea pen today and was in love! It had a little more red/coral in it than the picture, but it was still nice. I wonder if I'd made a note to GPC that I wanted more turquoise, I could have gotten it. Still, it's awesome. I was a little worried when I filled it with ink and it didn't write right away. I tested it and it wrote a bit, got fainter, then went dry. I let it sit for a couple of hours and tried it again, and it worked. It writes nice and smooth, not scratchy at all, fits well in my smallish hand, very lightweight. I don't press too hard so I don't know if the flex nib is a plus or not. So glad I got this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful I own two Noodler's pens, one Ahab Cobalt Demonstrator, and this. Above my preference with this wonderful material, I say I prefer the Konrad design to the Ahab. My Ahab's filling mechanism broke and is now a permanent eyedropper, and I've had more issues with it than this one. This Konrad looks great in picture, but even better in person, the flex is great, and like all Noodler's pens you can tinker with them, but they seem to write really nice right out of the box. If I were to find something to complain about it would the stiff mechanism. With it having a blind cap there really isn't a reason for it being so. I think I may need to put some silicon grease on the inside to alleviate it, but after I do I think it will be amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great pen for sketching I was a little nervous about ordering this pen. The uniqueness really appealed to me; the possibility of having to spend hours tweaking with it didn't. My fears were unfounded- it writes beautifully straight out of the box (my ink tests and wider experience are limited, but Blue Nose Bear flows through it fabulously). The flex is enough to be noticeable and great for a drawing pen. I can get enough line variation to add expression, but it's easier to control than a brush pen. It creates great lettering as well. The nib feels smooth, and the pattern has a bit more red than in the photos but it's clear that each one is unique.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to leave at home... I put an EF Gold-plated Goulet nib in it, and keep it filled with Noodler's Bulletproof Black. Thus, I call this one Superman. Flawless in performance, ergonomics definitely superior to the standard vegetal-resin Konrad with the addition of the flared grip in the acrylic model. It feels good to hold, especially unposted, with just enough heft to feel a visceral connection to the milled acrylic and ink reservoir. It's an entirely proportionate design in its refinement, economy, and aesthetic presentation. The piston mechanism is a bit sticky and squeaky, requiring some care when in operation to avoid messes. It wouldn't be a Noodler's pen if it didn't smell, though, and both of my acrylic Konrads smell faintly of superglue (cyanoacrylate). The materials garner praise such as, "kinda heinous but I love it", which I believe to be the entire point of Noodler's pens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Careful on Reassembly if you take the nib/feed out Had this pen for a few months and loved it. Took out the nib/feed for cleaning and put it back in and it worked well?except it then started leaking into the cap. Couldn?t for the life of me figure out why and thought it was ?burping?. Then, I decided to unscrew the tip of the cap and look into the top of the pen while the cap was screwed on. I noticed that the top of the feed near the tip was gently but perfectly touching the inside of the cap when the cap was screwed on. This would cause capillary leakage. So, I rotated the nib/feed 90d inside the pen shaft and put the cap on and looked at it and there was slight clearance. Pen doesn?t leak into the cap anymore since then. You would think that the pen cap would go on perfectly parallel with the pen shaft but there?s a slight angle on it. So, be careful to make sure your nib/feed isn?t touching the inside of the cap if you disassemble it completely for a full cleaning. Would have given a 5 otherwise. Great pen for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful look and smooth writing I primarily use the flex pens for artwork (have bought several from here including the Noodlers brush pens). This pen writes/sketches perfectly right out of the box. The only quibble I have but is not a big deal is that the marbling on mine is a LOT more coral red than blue. It actually is a reverse of what is show in the photo and in the YouTube vid, but I understand these variations will happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Colorful! This is my second Konrad and I really like it. I also have the Emeralds on the Sun Konrad. I have had no problems with it writing, although I don't really use it much for flex writing. I did wash it out before using it. With the first Coral Seas Goulet sent me, the pen broke at the section threads when I was cleaning it for the first time. Goulet took care of it right away and sent me another one. No problems with this one. I have it appropriately inked with Lamy Turquoise! Goulet Pens is great!
