Noodler's Konrad Acrylic Flex Fountain Pen - Appalachian Pearl

The Konrad Acrylic flex pen was introduced in early 2013 - it is smaller than the Ahab, but larger than the Nib Creaper. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a twist piston mechanism with a blind cap. The Konrad Acrylic is made of acrylic acetate.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, expect some variation in the pattern from what you see here. But hey, that just makes each pen unique!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lil' beauty. I am avid writer who has been holding on to a Heirloom Wood Journal with a leather bounded spine, ivory pages, and gilded edges... it makes my mouth water just looking at it. I did not want to write in it until I found the perfect pen. I have had it since December 2013, where I found it at a thrift shop for no more than 6 dollars. Well, I did not know much about fountain pens... until my boyfriend just happened to get a job with Goulet this year. After fountain pen lessons (as silly as it sounds, quite beneficial) with him, and some research, he told me I could choose a pen and he would give me my first fountain pen (he knows me well). I chose this one and... I absolutely adore it. We loaded this beauty with Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses (which is my favorite shade of purple), and I haven't stopped writing in my journal since I have gotten it. This fountain pen writes so smoothly and eloquently I get lost in the words I write.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely I often lose myself staring at this pen and the gorgeous pearl-like reflections of light it produces. Now I can sympathize with Gollum. ;-) In my opinion, Appalachian Pearl at the moment is the most beautiful pen in the Noodler's line. It is darker and less translucent than other pearlescent acrylic Konrads (I also have Rattlesnake & Adrenaline), and therefore doesn't suffer as much from color bleedthrough of the ink. Regarding ink, it turned out to be a great match with the Bad Blue Heron. This ink has excellent flow and this combination allowed to achieve great flex, with line variation from 0.2 to 2.2 mm, without railroading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Service There is another review of the pen. This review is about the customer service. The pen that was sent initially was defective. It leaked at the section. Given the way the product was packed, it is more probable that the defect was a manufacturing defect and not the result of postal service. Goulet Company ala Alexis Ross handledperfectly the situation, and within days a replacement was received along with a postal label for returning the pen. It's a simple matter of slapping the postal label on the package and taking it to the post office. There were two lessons learned in this experience: First, wash out a new pen with water and after drying the pen off, take a dry tissue to see if there are any leaks. It's better than discovering a leak with leaking ink! Second, buy from a company like Goulet, where the customer service is excellent and the procedure for returning the merchandise is simple and easy to accomplish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The ultimate pen for doodling or scribbling! I have to admit, I had my own worries when I bought this pen. But I'm glad I did it! For most of the part, what people said is true. You really do need to adjust the feeder and nib patiently to get it work without a hitch. But when you do get it work... it moves so swift but still retains that paper feedback that always tempts you to scribble more and more. Don't give up hope tinkering with this pen, be patient, and get a spare feeder and nibs just in case you draw the short straw from the lot. Thank you Goulet Team!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The logical step up Nathan Tardif continues to amaze me. If you think that $40 is a lot for a Noodler's pen you should try these babies. This is the natural step up in quality from the already great Ahab and Konrad pens. The pen gives the impression of a strick quality-controled production. Apart the magnificient marble effect of the acrylic, the pen writes quite well out of the box. Even though the Noodler's famous ebonite feed is heat-adjustable, in my case I didin't have to do anything else than ink the pen and write with it right away. The pen is larger than the Konrad. Uncapped it is actually longer than the Ahab. That makes it very comfortable to hold and its light weight makes this a pen that can be used both for taking quick notes and for writing long letters without any problem. Overall, I must say that Tardif did it again. I totally recommend it to all of the Noodler's fans!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So glad I decided to get this pen! This is my second Konrad, my first in acrylic. I like the celluloid version, but really like the looks of the acrylic pens, so I decided to try one. I'm really pleased with this pen. I know it's recommended to flush this pen thoroughly before inking it, but I was too impatient so I inked it right away. It wrote well right out of the box. It's not a very wet writer, but it's pretty smooth, with just a hint of feedback. I only collect piston-fills, and so I'm always on the lookout for one that is attractive and reasonable in price. This pen is great value for the money, and I wouldn't hesitate to get more... since it comes in so many great colour combinations that I'm not likely to be able to decide on just one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first fountain pen I've had this pen now for several months, and I am more and more happy with it all the time. I ignored a lot of good advice and bought this as my first fountain pen; I was worried I wouldn't be able to tinker with it in the way I was told I would need to with a Noodler's pen. That was not the case. Upon arrival, I used Brian's great videos to clean and heat-set the feed, and the pen worked exactly as I hoped. No adjustments needed, though I did eventually pull the nib a little farther down to get some more flex out of it (only after I had it for a while and felt brave enough to fiddle with it). To my surprise, I did not ruin anything and I love this pen even more. I really wanted to start with a flex nib so I could get the beautiful shading I saw in so many of the inks offered, while still being able to write with a fairly fine line when I wanted. The color is lovely (Appalachian Pearl) and I still find myself staring at it from time to time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just as good as the Ahab - Less the smell Nice product. Beautiful flex. And it doesn't stink like the Ahab. I'd recommend this one over the Ahab any time.
