A note from the founder:

Henry Gage (3rd Viscount Gage) son of Thomas Gage (Royal Military Governor of Massachusetts) was responsible for the purchase of an estimated 19,000 bottles of wine including the most popular at the time among the aristocrats: red port, dark sherry, and Madeira… As the aristocrats surely were not giving the wine to those commoners paying the excessively punitive taxation of empire, but instead were using it to pry influence and connections from fellow aristocrats...in order to better distribute the largess and grandeur of state power and wealth amongst themselves – Noodler’s Ink has modeled “American Aristocracy” as an ink bottled individually, one bottle at a time with each bottle thus being purposefully unique…to resemble a conservative colonial semblance of the three most aristocratic colours: red port, dark sherry, and Madeira.

These reflect a series of plum burgundy hues – a very old style royal purple ink, traditionalist in tone due to the distance of the colonial era and age of the collective memory of it – yet fairly dramatic in the contrast of its lines upon the page. Hopefully, the memory of that “ancient regime” may give pause to those who may otherwise be prepared to embrace a new one that is surprisingly similar in its motives and behaviors.

It is being introduced simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic with an apology to His Majesty, King George III of Great Britain printed upon the content side of every label. As it is hoped any form of aristocracy never again establishes a permanent presence in both New England and Olde England…the ink is not bulletproof. A swatch of the ink utilizing a fresh cork from Portugal seems appropriate given the provenance of English aristocratic wines....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plum version I received the dark purple or plum version of this ink. I've not put it through a wide nib yet but I have tried it with a Brause Rose flex nib. I tried it on both standard yellow notepad paper and Bienfang rag vellum paper. Nether gave sign of feathering at all. The Bienfang is extremely thin paper and there was no bleed through on that. It flowed well through the nib as I find most Noodler's inks do. In my opinion it's another darn good ink. The purple version doesn't go down as a light color. In fact the Goulet swatch is pretty well near how it looks in person on paper. Drying time? Can't say as it's not an ink characteristic I'm usually concerned with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from YMMV out-of-the-bottle, but mixes superbly with Whiteness of the Whale! The bottle I got was so dark as to almost be a black when used unmixed; my initial response was disappointment (though it is indeed very fast-drying, and enough components are waterproof to retain readability even if wet). What turned me into an outright fan of this ink is how well it mixes: Combined 4:1 with Whiteness of the Whale (4mL:1mL), what had been almost a black turns into the burgundy color I'd hoped for, and retains its quick-drying properties! I'm using this in a 1949 Parker 51, so I can't say how it'd behave in a dryer pen (or one with a less cavernous feed), but it flows very well for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got the coffee brown colored one This was a fun little game of random ink. When it is inked up and flowing out of a Konrad, it is a lovely shade of brown. A smear with a Qtip looks like the bottom picture. The dried ink doesn't smear with a wet finger, but haven't done an extensive drip test.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Vintage color - Feathers like crazy Love the color variation bottle to bottle, I got the more maroon version. It flows well, looks like its doing fine on the paper then BAM it explodes and feathers. I knew this was a possibility with a quick dry ink, but took the risk because I liked the color so much. Sadly I wont be using the ink that much because of the feathering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wet but beautiful I was hoping for the more purple version, however, the one I received was more red than purple, almost burgundy. All fine and good because it matches my pen, motorcycle, and a few shirts. Even in my fairly dry Lamy Safari F, this flows well, it's wet, a really good ink for a Lamy. I can't use it on certain notepads because it bleeds through the paper. Find the right paper and it dries quickly though and looks great. Another thought, it's really smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice color I recently bought this because I was intrigued with the different color choices. I was interested in a purple color that was more subdued. The color I received was the more purple of the colors shown and was just what I was looking for. The ink handles very nicely and shows as a nice dusty purple/maroon color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Goes down smoothly and dries quickly Not sure exactly which version I received, but it is one of the darker ones. It seems a little darker than the King Philip Ahab. But as a lefty, I like it a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Noodler's Success As a fan of Noodler's inks and dark reds/maroon/purples, this ink caught my eye early on. I enjoyed the "surprise" factor of not knowing which one you might get. I received the lighter of the three and it is wonderful. Very saturated and moderate shading. I do get some bleed through, even on good paper (Rhodia), but it won't stop me from using it. On cream paper, it gives off a very historic feel, like that of old documents. Well done Nathan.
