Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Maximillian Emerald

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Experience with Noodler's Pens I received my Noodler's Ahab Flex pen in the mail today! I have never used a Noodler's pen but I purchased one because of the recommendation of Brian Goulet and Stephen Brown (sbrebrown on YouTube). I also purchased the o-ring and silicon grease to turn the piston filler into an eye dropper. I have watched Brian's video on the Ahab several times and was expecting to adjust the nib and feed to adjust the pen to my writing style but it wrote perfectly straight out of the box. I inked it up with Noodler's Gruene Cactus Eel and it wrote beautifully and smoothly. Great everyday carry pen that I highly recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 50% fun, 50% value, and 50% annoying. I'd already wanted to get a flex pen, and after seeing this one on Bottom Shelf had to make the buy. After doing the initial clean, I loaded it up with some Noodler's Burma Road Brown for some scribbling and sketching and found that out of the box, it wrote fairly well, if a bit dry. As my first flex pen, it's been a ton of fun bumbling through copperplate and Spencerian letters... On the other hand, the finicky nib has probably led to more ink on my hands from adjusting the thing than anything else I've owned. Without adjustments, it would railroad after about 3 inches of flexed line and no amount of tapping or shaking would get it started again. After a bit of research I've gotten it to start reliably, with 6 fins showing. Hopefully, this fixes the problems for the time being. Verdict: Love-hate relationship.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great-looking/great-writing Ahab for me! This Emerald Ahab demonstrator is my 6th of the line. It writes just as well as the other five. In fact, I've only had issues with 1 out of 6 Ahabs. (That was due to a set of slightly-irregular feed cuts, which I identified via comparison with my other Ahabs and then rectified with a scalpel.) IMO, Noodler's Ahab pens are kinda like good barbecue. Sure, they're a little messy sometimes, but they're still damn-good and worth the mess. LOL

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice pen Nice green pen. It looks just like the picture. These are very inexpensive pens and I think that for $20, they are great. I have a couple pens from another company that are more expensive and made by one of the "big companies" that fell apart and didn't write anywhere as nice as my new Ahabs. At first glance they may seem a bit cheap, but fill it with ink and use it a while and you WILL be a fan. This is the first flex nib pen I have ever used. From the start I loved it. I am still trying to figure out how to fully use the flex of the nib, but for normal writing use, it is awesome. The flex isn't uncontrollable and I can take notes and sign documents without any issues. BTW: Noodler's Ink is the best! Goulet Pen Co. is awesome - Great to do business with.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from over rated poor quality, over rated. completely lack lustre experience. flow problems, cleaned, re-cleaned, adjusted, re-adjusted, leaked, not got much good to say about this product..when it wrote the nib was nice and flexi and gave decent line variation a little scratchy but useable..however the rest of the messing around with it just wasn't worth it..gave up..went back to the namiki/safari.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If it wasn't for the smell.. Very good writer, as big as I'd thought but very nice to hold. Leaves a beautiful wet line with good variation, even though I'm still getting used to it. The sole problem is the disgusting smell it does have. I haven't tried it with all my inks yet only because of the smell, really. I can only hope it will dissipate in a few weeks, otherwise I'll have to resort to the trick of rubbing scented candle wax like I've read at the FPN. Oh, and it was a nice surprise to get it here today of all days, the 161st anniversary of Moby Dick!!! ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Pen, Maximillian Emerald Demonstrat The order was received very timely and the packaging was excellent. The pen was as advertised, meaning it took lots of tweaking and adjustment to get it to work, but well worth the effort and at a very reasonable price. I really appreciate being able to use a personal check for payment and being able to have it shipped to a P. O. Box. Also, very helpful/friendly information about placing the order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much fun to use! Love this pen. First off it's gorgeous. That deep emerald green really pops and I love the fact that it's a demonstrator and I can see the ink level. Second, it writes like a dream. Super smooth with Noodler's Black and the flex nib is really fun to use. And only $20? Wow. As always, packed amazingly and shipped fast by the crew at Goulet. This pen rocks, as does the Goutlet Pen co.
