Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - King Philip Purple

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - King Philip Purple Demonstrator is rated 4.4722 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from I like it but... This pen was great until I lost some of the internal parts down the sink. :( I thought it would work great as an eyedropper, but the heat from your hands causes the ink to literally fall out of the pen in giant drops. Not fun. On the upside, the design is great. I love how big and comfortable it is to hold. A few downsides are that it's unbalanced with the cap posted, and I can't seem to keep from touching the feed when I write. Also, it takes a LOT of pressure to get any decent amont of flex, and I personally think the nib is too fine without any flex. It's a fun pen, especially with highly shading inks, but it's too messy and scratchy for heavy use in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Pen I've had a few fountain pens and always end up dealing with issues like skipping or poor ink flow so that I have to tinker with them constantly. I haven't had any such problems with the Noodler's flex pen. I followed the basic instructions and easily took it apart and opened another channel (since I know I like a wet pen), and that's all it. It writes so easily that I haven't used any of my other pens since. The only problem I've had is slight skipping if I let the piston ink drop below 1/4 full. I'm more than happy to keep the pen filled, and I'm even thinking about getting one in another color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pen, Great Deal Though I wasn't expecting much out of a $20 fountain pen, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much I like this pen. The flex nib is really quite nice, I wish more fountain pens would feature them. I've already gone through two fillings, first with Diamine Blaze Orange and second J. Herbin 1670. My only complaint is the size of the pen; early on I found myself holding the pen very close to (and by) the nib and getting inky fingers, but that isn't enough to stop me from writing with it. Overall I haven't had any problems with ink-flow or scratchiness and would highly recommend this pen. Finally, I realize that I might be in the minority here, but, I even like the way this pen smells.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New fountain pen user... I am new to fountain pens and was interested in more art-y type uses for fountain pens, like lettering. I wanted to try a flex pen. I know modern flex pens aren't as flex-y as vintage ones, but I'm new to this so the Ahab it was. The pen is nice...it doesn't feel super expensive, but it wasn't! Right out of box it had a weird smell. Honestly, it's like vomit. Gross. It's dissipated a bit over time, but the smell is still there. So keep that in mind. Anyway, I cleaned the pen before use and it worked right away. I didn't have any of the problems that others have. I like this pen and will probably buy another one in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I ordered this pen in my second order from Gouletpens specifically for use with Kung Te-cheng ink. My first order included a Nib Creaper and Konrad but did not include an Ahab pen. I have used this pen with several different Noodler's inks including; Kung Te-cheng, Manjiro Nakahama, Air-corp, Antietam, Apache Sunset, Qin Shi Huang, Black and Cayenne - each has worked very well. I can press the flex nib to full flex and draw a fairly quick line nearly the full length of an eleven inch sheet of paper and have no railroading. I like the ease of dis-assembly for cleaning. I also like the increased diameter of the pen and find the grip very comfortable to use for long periods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap flex pen = excellent buy I'm normally more of a calligrapher, so seeing all the reviews this thing was getting talking about a flex nib fountain pen... I gave it a shot. This is SO totally what I've been looking for - I can use it as a normal fountain pen with a bit of flourish, or I can go full speed/flex and do some lovely copperplate style things. I'm probably going to get another one. The purple is fairly dark, but you can see ink levels if not color. LOVE this pen!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Own Creation Bought this pen about a month ago. Feels great. Perfect in fact BUT, the nib is not to my liking. Sooooooo, I went out and bought a Goulet #6 in Bold. WOW. Changed the entire feel of the pen and altered the writing experience. This pen ROCKS. My advice is to try the pen with the nib that is included. If you like it, great. If not pull out the nib and put in the Goulet nib in its place as that nib is big and pretty and so smooth. (Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it.) Either way, you will have a great pen.
