Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Burmese Ruby

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Burmese Ruby Demonstrator is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pen for grading papers! This is my third Ahab f.p.; I have the Lapis Ahab, and the clear Demo Ahab as well. I have taken a liking to using the Monteverde stub nib on these Ahabs, as I find these italic nibs keep up with the wet line that the Ahab delivers. I am using this Burmese Red Demo Ahab with the Monteverde black italic nib to grade student papers. The pen is holding an enormous amount of Noodler's Nikita Red (hence the reason I purchased this red demonstrator) as I am filling the pen as an eyedropper. I have been able to grade over 30 papers without thinking about needing to refill the ink. My students may not like to see so much red ink spilled upon the pages of their compositions, but I love it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and intriguing pen, even for newbie I'm new to fountain pens, so when discovering about things like nibs and demonstrators and converters and such I came across Goulet's review of this pen as a good example of a pen with a flex nib that was well executed, easy to use and fun to just play around with. I've found it to be all this and then some. While my hand isn't very practiced or disciplined to exploit the line variations you can achieve with this pen, I am certainly inspired to keep learning about the craft of writing and illustrating with this pen. It's a great value at a good price point. You won't regret getting one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very practical and simple... This pen is simply simple! Its an excellent pen to start out with, all of the parts come apart for easy clean up. So if your like me and use the wrong ink (and ends up drying up insed the pen) you can have the peace of mind that a simple wash under warm water with a touch of dish soap will restore your pen like new. And at 20 bucks a pop it is one of the cheapest flexible nib pens you can find. The line variation is certainly noticeable once you start using it correctly. So if your contemplating wether or not to get this pen just go for it! You wont be disappointed!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better than average marginally Shipping is cost is ridiculously high, the only reason I bought from Goulet is that it is the sole provider of some products. I paid $45 for products, $40 for shipping; I pay $17 even from Japan with tracking and it reaches within a week not in 3 weeks. For the product, it has a weird smell; I inked the pen with Diamine Brillant Red; While I had no problems with the same ink with Sailor Naginata Togi, this time ink was over wet, and sticky. I wonder if there is some problem with the nib or the internals of the pen; I have to wait a little more so that ink will dry yet it is sticky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value in fountain pens The ruby color is beautiful, and the engineering of this pen makes you wonder why it is so cheap and so well made. Total disassembly without tools, all parts user serviceable and easy to obtain.. amazing. Just like everyone else said, it is a pen for tinkerers. If you want it to work 100% right out of the box, buy a Lamy. If not adjusted right, it will skip, or flood, or something else. Wonderful pairing with Noodler's heavy shading inks, I used Black Swan in Australian Roses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Burmese Ruby I live on the west coast of Canada, and ordered these items since I can't purchase them here. The Flex pen is everything the reviews promised, very smooth with a variable of line. With the Lex grey ink I also received a free pen which performs very well also. What a bonus! Customer service and shipping was prompt and good, even with out of country delivery. I have already showed and recommended these products to artist friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice pen The ruby color is very attractive and the pen is easy to hold and use. Being able to see the ink is convenient but the color makes it more attractive than a clear demonstrator. I am using the cartridge for now but might try taking it out and using it as an eye dropper pen. I am doing that with the freebee platinum preppy and am pleased with that pen too. The Ahab is worth the price for a better made pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifu leaves a review... Boring business stuff: Order came really quickly (considering it had winged itself across the Atlantic) in perfect condition and with a splendid note. Fun pen stuff: I loves my new pen! I haven't got hold of Noodlers Ink yet so my output hasn't been perfect, but the build and the function of the pen is absolutely unparalleled for it's price, I really couldn't recommend it enough. I'll be waiting patiently to see if Mr Noodler releases a 'Moby Dick' version with a super flexing nib.
