Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Vulcan's Coral

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Vulcan's Coral is rated 4.6786 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the pen -- and the packing! This Ahab was my first experience with a flex pen. I bought it because it came with a free Goulet nib, so I could change it out if I didn't like the flex nib. (Good move, Goulets!) However, I kept the flex nib in and learned to use it properly. The resulting writing let me take advantage of the shading in various ink colors, and it looks great. The Ahab body has a nice width, without the weight of some pens, great for my arthritic fingers. I like the fact that everything comes apart, making it easy to clean and easy to play with. The Vulcan's Coral is more of a deep burgundy, and the swirls of shaded color make the pen look like satin. Got to say a word about Trevor's careful packing of my pen and ink samples. The bubble wrap, the crumpled packing paper... it all equals FREE CAT TOYS! The entertained cats left me alone to enjoy my writing. Thanks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Oh, Boy, I'm Going to Have Fun with This Pen! What can I say about this pen? It's sturdy. It writes well. It's red...my favorite pen color. It's my least expensive fountain pen, and the one I'm likely to reach for on a daily basis. I really like that I can vary my line width from thin to medium without much effort. It's nicely balanced posted and unposted. I kind of like the scratchy sound it makes when I write. It smells funny, but I don't care...the smell is distinctive, reminds me that I'm writing with a Noodler's fountain pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Smooth writing right out of the box. Will take it apart just for the fun of it. My third order went in yesterday. My wish list never seems to get smaller even though I keep ordering from it. Alex, Katy and Greg did a superior job for me as I know they do for every one. Goulet Pen Company is a triple AAA quality organization that feels like a small local store even though they are hundreds of miles away. Quality people and quality products are what make Goulet Pen Company a major source for fountain pens and related items as well as a center for information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Pen This is my second pen, my first being on old beat up thing my mom sent me. I have since bought a Jinhao 3000 and the Ahab has such a beautiful line compared to the other two. Consistent, no blobbing at the end of the stroke, no dry starts. Beautiful writing pen. If you slide the feed back just a hair further than normal you will get more flex. Thanks, Brian Goulet for that tip! :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice pen, nice nib First, the smell everyone mentions? It smells like any other pen circa 1970s. I always thought it was the smell of the ink when I was little, but I guess it was the pen itself. It makes me think of writing in pen as a child. So I kind of like the smell. The piston is easy to use. I ran out of ink quicker than I expected. The nib and feed may take a bit of tweaking. But once it's writing, it has a nice variation in widths. The pressure needed for writing in a copperplate (flexed a lot) style starts to hurt my hand quickly. The Ahab is a bit easier to flex the nib so if that is your goal. Maybe the Ahab (which is also much larger) is the pen for you instead. Amazing pen for the price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty pink pen! The Ahab is quite a large pen, so if you have small hands, you might not like it. I have several Konrads, and this is somewhat larger than that as well. I love the colour of the red / pink / white swirls: I bought this pen to match Noodler's Empire Red ink. If flex nibs turn you off, try it with a Goulet nib.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pen! I love the Ahab pens and this color is gorgeous! It is easily one of my favorites. The pen I got writes perfectly out of the box and the feed has no trouble keeping up with frequent flexing. The Black Swan in English Roses ink goes with this pen very well. If you love that ink, you should get this pen!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good tinkerers pen Its a decent pen given the price, and a good intro to flex nib writing before going up a notch to an old Waterman or Swan. You really do need to take it apart and clean it. It will take some time to get the nib and feed to where you want them. Ive found the nibs are hit or miss. On one pen Ive got nib that requires a ton of pressure and has a broader non-flexed line, but writes well. On another Ive got a nib that requires little pressure and has a finer non-flexed line, but is shaped improperly and wont write with reshaping.
