Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Truk Lagoon

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Truk Lagoon is rated 4.5897 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Truk Lagoon I wouldn't recommend the 'Truk Lagoon' for appearances if you're looking for a cool demonstrator, go for the clear one. I may try that next. The tint is much stronger than I expected from the photo and it has this unwanted and ugly yellow tints on the inside of the body tip. This yellow tint is so distracting that it catches my eye when I lift my pen up to use it, aesthetically annoying. Also, this body case smells really bad. The first time I used it I wasn't happy. I think the ink, Noodler's Rachmainoff, I used was a little too dry for the pen. I took it apart and put it together and tried a wetter ink. It worked better, but it leaked a lot, so that means I probably have to adjust it further. I like using this pen for the results I get, the flexing, it just takes a lot of fine tuning I suspect. It has become a journey in itself, which I think is a good thing, especially if you are into tinkering or like challenges. TLDR; Truk Lagoon, Avoid (for aesthetic reasons). The Ahab in general, Recommend (for fun flexing reasons).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at 5th or 6th Sight? For the first week I absolutely hated this pen. It was pretty, but it simply wouldn't write for me at all. I played with the nib as Brian teaches us in the videos, but nothing was working for me. Eventually, I guess I finally adjusted it to suit my writing style because miraculously, the pen learned to behave! Since then I have become a huge fan of the Ahab Flex, and I am planning on picking up a few more. I have converted this one to an eyedropper, and will do the same to the new ones. I'm also planning on getting some Goulet Nibs for them. The moral of the story is: Be patient with this pen and keep adjusting until you find your stride. If you don't give up on the Ahab, then the Ahab won't give up on you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Required some adjustments I followed the directions to flush the pen but it required further adjustments to get it working. The problem was that I had to tap the nib on paper prior to writing but I could only put down 10 words before the ink dried up and stopped completely. Very annoying! With some diligence, I discovered that the channels on the side of the carbonite feed were not properly grooved to allow ink to flow between the center channel and the side channels. I used an X-Acto knife to carve out the side channels (very carefully!) so that they connected to the main channel. After that, ink flowed properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Functional I own six Ahabs. I'm an artist, and they're really unbeatable as sketch pens. The flexible nib is great for sketching with, and the ability to customize the flow, flex, and smoothness of the nib is pretty incredible. I use metal polishing/sharpening paste on a strop to get just the feel I want for each. In addition, the low price means I'm not afraid to bring them along to wherever I'm sketching, so while I've broken or lost a couple, it's not the disaster that a more expensive fountain pen would be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant remedy The first instance of this pen I received had the trim ring on the cap installed upside down. I took a picture of the error and sent it to Goulet, and they happily replaced the entire pen, turning down my offer to send back the cap or the entire pen. Along with the new pen, which arrived promptly, came two ample sample vials of ink, showing me how much they care about pleasing their customers when even the slightest detail is not to their high standards. Thank you, Goulet Pens! You have turned me into a raving fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely pen, great price I've had my Ahab for about two weeks now, and I love it. It writes as well as pens I have that cost three times the price. I have the flex set to fairly minimal, but I love that you can adjust it; it makes your writing just a wee bit cooler. The robins-egg blue/light turquoise is also quite lovely. I have mine filled with Pilot Asa-gao, and it's stunning. I've tried it with several other inks, and they all flow beautifully. Follow instructions, and you'll be very, very happy! Don't be intimidated--the videos make adjusting it easy and FUN!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a pen safe to tinker with. I love my fountain pens, but wouldn't dream of taking a $100 pen apart. I was hesitant to try the Noodler's because of the mixed reviews. I am very glad I did. I cleaned it all carefully with a toothbrush and dishsoap, putit together, and inked it. What a sense of accomplishment! It writes beautifully, is comfortable to hold, and I love this specific shade. It has become one of my every day carry pens. I switched the nib to the Goulet EF which is an even smoother writer, also very easily. I love being able to do this by myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pen I was given this pen as a gift about a month ago, and thus far the experience has been pleasant. Initially there were some issues with the feed being too loose and ink leaking, but the other two Ahabs that came with the order didn't have this issue, and neither did the replacement that was sent to me later on. It's very easy to refill and clean, and the nib (while a bit stiff) flexes well. I like that it's easy to completely disassemble, and maintenance should be quick and inexpensive. I quite like the look of Noodler's Rachmaninoff, General of the Armies, and Saguaro Wine in the pen; they work very well with the beautiful pool blue color.
