Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Pima Tortoise

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Pima Tortoise is rated 4.4138 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased, works great. This is my 2nd Noodler's Ahab pen. I like the color and it performs just great. I flushed the pen with a mild dishwashing soap and let it dry before I filled in with ink. On this pen I installed the #6 Goulet 1.1 Stub Italic Nib and it is a very smooth writer with Noodler's Purple ink. On my other Ahab I followed the same cleaning routine and left the flex nib on it, and it works great. I use Noodler's Black and Noodler's Antietam Ink in that pen. I watched Brian's videos that show how to adjust the nib and it was easy because my nib did not require much adjustment. Good Luck and Happy Writing !

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it! Nice cheap flex pen! I bought two (one in Pearl color and one Pima Tortoise) and I am satisfied with them. Performed as expected after reading or watching reviews, even slightly better. They write extra fine, when used as normal pens, yet allow very nice line width variation. Love this color. Mine were well finished. No flow problems. Simple, straighforward and nice pens. Love the piston! Easy to clean. "Pearl" colored one had no smell, or very little. Pima Tortoise did smell, but is loosing it after a few days. Not easy to post, but given the size of the body they are easier to use without posting the cap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and a great buy! I'd already bought three Ahabs for friends (who like bright colors) and liked the size so much that when I saw the photo of the Pima Tortoise I knew I had to have it. It is even lovelier than the photo, a kind of swirly silver translucent amber. The size and material are very comfortable. I mean to get an italic to fit into it, but find myself enjoying the nib it came with. Generally I prefer broad nibs, stubs, or italics. Flex doesn't interest me. But The fine nib has grown on me. It worked great right out of the box and it's great for notes and lists. Plus I can carry it around and not worry about losing the pen since it's not expensive. I filled it with Stormy Grey and really like this pen and ink combo. It is very satisfying to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from MY Ahab Flex Pen The Ahab is a very hard pen to love at first. I'm writing this review probably 5 months after buying it. At month 2, I would have given this pen a pretty horrible review. But now that I have had it for a while, I love it. It's one of my everyday carries. It looks beautiful. The material is a pleasure to hold, the construction is simple, and very VERY easy to disassemble, and it is very easy to clean. You must know HOW to use the pen. Do not overflex it. Heat set it whenever you disassemble it. Bring a paper towel! Keep it full. Big ink capacity means its very subject to burping due to heat changes. Adjust the feed/nib if its too wet/dry. MAKE THE AHAB YOUR PEN. I think the biggest issue with the Ahab is people buy it as a beginner pen, but are too afraid to play with it, because its one of their first pens. Buy the ahab, grab a spare nib, get a spare feed, MESS UP THE PEN. Use the pen as your learning tool into the world of fountain pens. Read, read, read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A year of complete pen satisfaction I've owned my Ahab for a year and I'm entirely pleased with the pen and with Goulet's stellar service. The "recommended" flush with water, detergent and ammonia is a must. I did that several times and even removed the feed and nib, soaking them separately. Cutting debris and residual oils will not help your ink flow, so get rid of 'em and enjoy a superb $20 instrument. Oh, my Ahab is actually Lapis Inferno but this new color has my attention.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ahab I have a love/hate relationship with these pens. The feed moves, the nib moves, and sometimes you find for some reason have a lot of ink on your fingers. All that said, I am always reaching for this pen and have already purchased a second for a Goulet Nib. I dig the bigger size. The colors are awesome too. Just get one and play with it. Just beware you may get drips on your work and stained hands as a result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Stuff I love Ahabs and this one is no exception. It's a beautiful pen and writes wonderfully. I have a bunch of these pens and have swapped out some of their nibs for Goulet stubs and Noodler's fine nibs and have come to the conclusion that not only is it a fun pen as shipped, it's a great base pen for other nibs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler?s Ahab - Goulet #6 1.1 mm Stub All of my fountain pens are armed with Cursive Italic or Stub Italic nibs because that?s the way I like them. I?ve long wanted to try out a Noodler?s fountain pen, but I have no desire or use for a Flex nib. When Goulet Pens introduced their #6 Steel nibs, I promptly ordered 2 Noodler?s Ahabs and 2 Goulet #6 Steel 1.1 mm Stub nibs. The Ahab is a unique pen. It has the look of a much more expensive pen. The ?celluloid derivative? material of which it is constructed delivers a pen that is much lighter in weight than a pen of this rather large size would suggest. It?s feather light. But it is well balanced and pleasant to write with. The clip?s stylized dorsal-view representation of a sperm whale (Captain Ahab?s nemesis) is a nice touch. And the Goulet nibs fit and match up perfectly with the feed in the Ahab. In short, I really like my Ahabs with the Goulet 1.1mm Stub nibs. I highly recommend!
