Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Pequot

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Among my favourites pens I just love my Ahabs pen (This is the third I buy in 3 months). I love their simplicity, the fact that they can be taken appart completeley and are, thus, quite easy to clean, their versatile ebonite feeds and their nibs, even if on that very one, I swapped the flex nib for a JoWo made GOULET nib, in EF. As for the material, I must say that I love the pattern, the cpolour and that the typical smell dissapears almost completely after a few weeks of use. I use my Ahabs on a daily basis, since I write my diary with one of those. So even if I might have anything between 4 and 10 pens inked-up on a given day, at least one will be an Ahab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really fun pen - awesome value I am a bit of a fountain pen newbie. I would highly recommend this pen to anyone who is looking for a nice "starter" pen like I was. The nib is fun once you get used to it and the pen holds a nice amount ink unmodified and ridiculous amount if you use it as an eyedropper. One caveat, if tinkering with your pen isn't something you think you would enjoy this pen probably isn't for you. Also, I think this pen is extra fun to write with when you fill it with De Atramentis Vanilla. They both have the same purple black fusion vibe and IMHO they complement each other well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Affordable Flex Pen This was my very first flex pen and I had been hesitant to venture to this area of fountain pens. But for $20 I received a pen of excellent value that performs exceptionally well. I had read ahead of time about the issues with cleaning and nib/feed adjustment so I had tempered expectations - the pen still blew me away. For $20 it is something I believe everyone should have. Easily converted to an eyedropper as well as it is compatible with the Goulet Nibs, this is an excellent pen. I took the time to clean the feed with soapy water and a soft toothbrush and have not had any flow problems that would not be related to the feed/nib positioning. It takes a little bit (and some ink on your fingers) to figure out what works best for you. But I believe it to be worth it. Not a perfect pen but a pen of great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OK, I confess. Alright, I admit it; I don't do any flex writing - zilch. I do, however, keep buying Ahab's. I love these pens. Order them along with a Goulet nib, and for $35 you get a wonderfully functional large-but-light pen, one that holds buckets of ink, has a feed that keeps up, and is both a piston filler and an eyedropper. A pen color called Pequot with Whaleman's Sepia ink in it. How cool is that?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Pequot Ahab Does the pen leak? Does it dry out? Do have to adjust the nib and feed? Will you have ink stained fingers? Does the piston stick? Will the pen frustrate you? The answer to all those questions is YES. Yes, it will happen! Yes is also the answer to the most important question for me and that's --- Am I having fun? It was and still is frustrating adjusting the nib and feed. Both pieces spent a whole day on opposite ends of my desk in time out. I then spent some time watching adjustment videos where people just pulled them out and put them back in and perfection every time. I called shenanigans on them all. Then I realized they could probably make the changes in their sleep and I just started. If you want a pen you can tinker with and make uniquely yours then get Noodler's stuff and put some work in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! This pen is awesome. I suppose it has a smell if you sniff it, but I don't, and it wears off fast. I don't understand why anyone would complain. You do need to wash it and watch the video on making adjustments before purchase. Then it is great. I absolutely love it. My favorite pen ever. Hint: try Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses. It is the perfect color for this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from simply beautiful! I love the Ahab, I've never seemed to have the problems others have remarked on, flow and flex have been good with all my four Ahabs. The colour schemes are a joy to the eye (topped only by my Konrad Coral Sea Acrylic) and they have a nice chunky feel to them. I'll probably be buying a few more before I'm through. The Goulet service is excellent, all items are well packaged and promptly shipped with numerable little personal touches, thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ahab flex the pen is absolutely worth the $20 investment. i've written with far more expensive pens, and find that the ahab competes quite favorably. the reason i got it was the amount of ink it will hold. i haven't converted it to an eye dropper, but i plan to. that said, even without converting it, it holds a lot of ink. plus it's so easy to clean because it all comes apart. great pen.
