Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Lapis Inferno

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Lapis Inferno is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Fountain Pen - Lapis Inferno Greetings, I inked the Ahab Lapis Inferno and I am amazed by the writing smoothness, the generous, just right amount of in delivered to the paper, and the neat filling system and the great amount of ink it holds. I have been using fountain pens for over fifty years and this is a great fountain pen. The price is great. I use the top brand names in pens, after loosing a couple over the years, I have been very careful about taking my pens out of the house. The Ahab is now in my coat pocket and ready to use out and about without fear of loosing it. Though I would be upset because I like it very much. Thank you for your very good service and the extra nib, Franc Teixiera

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really love this pen but... I'm having some trouble with in on the section. I think I'm touching the nib and or feed when I recap it and this is getting ink on the section. At first I thought I had a leak so I silicone greased the threads on the converter and barrel but that didn't fix it. The nib is so juicy that it transfer ink very easily (that is what it's supposed to do, right). I'm just going to need to be more careful capping the pen. I think it became noticeable on this pen because I'm using Liberty's Elysium , a dark ink. My other Ahabs have light inks or are Demonstrators and any ink inside the cap is noticeable. The penalty I pay for that beautiful dark blue pen!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Pen I've been surprised and pleased with this pen. I actually didn't expect to like it quite this much. I have arthritis--mild, so far-- in my hands, and a wider barrel is less fatiguing to grip, especially for extended periods. Also, the lightweight resin is much less fatiguing than the gorgeous but heavy laquered brass barrels of some pens. And not to mention the absolutely beautiful appearance of the pen. I'm proud to write with it--I flaunt it a little, showing off, so I'll be asked about it and can give people your URL so they know where to get one! Altogether, it's a lovely pen. I don't know yet how it's going to stand up to years of use, but so far it's well worth what I paid. Thanks! BL

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Lapis nferno I'm new to flex nibs so I am feeling my way into using my new Lapis. I love the look and feel of the pen in hand and prefer it to my regular flex nib Arizona. That said I haven't adjusted the feed/nib quite right yet. Average at the moment but if I get the feed just right.... good to excellent. Inked up with Noodler's La Reine Mauve at the moment but will probably change to Noodler's Ganges Blue or Baystate Blue. The service from team Goulet was great yet again with all my new acquisitions arriving safe and sound quick as a flash. Great service all round. Thanks and keep it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Nib Piston Fill Fountain Pen It's not often these days that a product surpasses expectations and hype. But it does! Smoooooth as butter, perfect ink flow (I can draw huge sweeping swashes--and I mean 10 inches--without a skip or a sputter)...just magic for writing and drawing. I saw one review that said the Ahab may be "the new Esterbrook". So true. In the 50s when schools taught penmanship and cursive, everyone HAD to use a fountain pen. We had Schaeffer's ($3, really nice), but the rich kids had Esterbrooks...SO SMOOTH, so beautiful. The Ahab actually brings back the same tactile thrill of writing with those old coveted Esterbrooks. This is a great pen for people with arthritis or hand injuries. It's nice and big (but not too big!), easy to hold and control, and comfy to use for hours on end. And DOES flex! A totally happy, satisfied customer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Smooth writing right out of the box. Will take it apart just for the fun of it. My third order went in yesterday. My wish list never seems to get smaller even though I keep ordering from it. Alex, Katy and Greg did a superior job for me as I know they do for every one. Goulet Pen Company is a triple AAA quality organization that feels like a small local store even though they are hundreds of miles away. Quality people and quality products are what make Goulet Pen Company a major source for fountain pens and related items as well as a center for information.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Value I got the Ahab in Lapis Inferno, and I'm pleased with it. For $20, I can't ask for more from a flex pen. The pen is evenly balanced, and the piston fill works nice and cleanly. My only con so far is that I already have had to smooth the nib due to scratching on the downstroke. I've been filling it with Noodler's Baystate Concord Grape and it flows evenly, and the pressure required to alter the flow is reasonable. I really enjoy this pen most of all because I can take it to work and I won't be devastated if someone swipes it (it's a very lovely pen!) because it is priced just right.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for a Whale yet! In brief, the Ahab is a vast improvement on the thinner, smaller Noodlers pens. This is a pen that is a better size for my hand (ie. larger), and the finish (one of the lapis), very good. The nib wrote immediately from inking; and the modest flex is excellent. My only problem, is that the o-ring on the top of the pen (not the piston, but on the pen itself), broke early and so I suffered ink spillage! I'm looking for the right size o-ring replacement here in Australia and it will happen - but for 30 cents, that's hardly a major catastrophe. Well done Noodlers!
