Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Ivory Darkness

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Ivory Darkness is rated 4.4286 out of 5 by 56.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed I was hoping for better, maybe I just got a bad pen. I cleaned the pen first thing after it arrived. I watched the video on cleaning it went pretty easy. However, the pen gave me trouble when writing. It took a couple of shakes to get the ink flowing every time I went to use it. and the nib would dry out during writing. So I cleaned it again. Still the same problem. I also adjusted the nib. to the point where it should have been bleeding ink. Still it didn't write well for me. Cleaned it a 3rd time, adjusted the nib. Finally I gave up and bought a Sheaffer 100. The sheaffer 100 writes well and that is now my everyday pen. The Ahab is in my desk drawer somewhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting pen, good value I'm an artist and I am used to flexible nibs in dip pens. When the Ahab works, it works well. Unfortunately, I find it extremely fussy--it'll work great, then shift a little, so I have to stop and readjust it, try it on a spare sheet of paper, readjust again, etc. That can get a bit old. It does make lovely marks, however, and creates lots of line variation. Personally, I find my dip pens less effort. You can't beat the price, and if you've never used flexible nibs, this would be a nice way to try it out. I will be experimenting with more inks to see if that helps (I've used two Noodler's inks so far).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Like the look, not crazy about nib quality I really like the feel of this pen, and for only $20, it has a refined look. I do however have a complaint about the nib. No matter how I adjust it, I could not get flow through the nib for more than a line or maybe two. When I put on another nib, I no longer have the problem. It could be that I just got a dud. During the brief times that I can get flow, it does actually have some nice flex to it at a fraction of the cost of some of the 14k options out there. One day I might try and pick up another of these and see if I have any better luck. Unfortunately, as far as I know, I cannot simply replace the nib on this pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mmmmm..... First the pen gets five stars for sheer hackability and flexibility, all problems aside. If you need a simple pen to give as a gift to a non-FPN type, not the best bet if you are drop shipping. The pen and nib must be cleaned prior to use (always a good idea anyways). If you want vintage style flex, the nib will not work as you think. If you do not want to mess with the pen to ensure proper flow, this pen is not for you. If you want a pen that you can tweak to write exactly how you want, this pen is for you. If you want to add a little flair to your writing, this pen is for you. If you want to be able swap nibs for one you prefer, this pen is for you. If you prefer a filling system that does not utilize cartridges or converters with minimal capacity, this pen is for you. Summary: If you love your fountain pens, this pen is for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A disappointment It is cheap, I know, but even if cheap, an item has to fulfil its dedicated task , I think. For me this pen simply doesn't work. I heard some good things and some bad things about it, the bad comments seem to be the more truthful ones. I am not a pen expert, but I tried some variations in the nib and feed setting, cleaned and reassembled everything, but I can't get it to a constant ink flow. After one or two lines it just stops writing. Priming the feed a bit doesn't work, I have to push ink through till it drips out to make it write for another line. Flexing works good when it writes. A Lamy Safari for example is also cheap but it works right out of the box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overflow when barrel is full Fits and handles very well, I like the wide girth for a male hand, and although I'd like it heavier, it is economically priced. My Ivory Darkness has a touch of reddish/pink hue in the 'ivory' part of the colouration. But a Warning... Filled this pen in the dropper/barrel style, and ink saturated the feed and nib. Overflowing drops onto page, and splattering about when moving. I use now with the piston, and all is well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Smooth writing right out of the box. Will take it apart just for the fun of it. My third order went in yesterday. My wish list never seems to get smaller even though I keep ordering from it. Alex, Katy and Greg did a superior job for me as I know they do for every one. Goulet Pen Company is a triple AAA quality organization that feels like a small local store even though they are hundreds of miles away. Quality people and quality products are what make Goulet Pen Company a major source for fountain pens and related items as well as a center for information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Pen Feels great in the hand. Easy to clean and change inks. Can't beat the price. After about a month, the "stink" is almost gone. I've actually come to appreciate the smell, lol. This pen can write very fine or very broad. It's lotsa fun. Everyone should have one or at least try one. Having the previous Noodler Flex pen as well, this is a nice evolutionary step forward from that. This pen is more refined in many different ways. This is a good thing.
