Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Creaper's Cobalt

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Creaper's Cobalt Demonstrator is rated 4.3529 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent, but You have to be willing to work with this pen. It might not have the best flow or feel right out of the box, but you can be assured that the product is high quality. I am still messing around with this pen, trying to make it even better. I will say, I tune this in my free time, and I have other reliable pens around just in case it needs some tining and I don't have the time. The pen flex is great, and you can use it has a thin line if using light pressure. If you are looking for a great reliable writing, that won't need tune ups (bi weekly or so for me) due to lots of serious flexing, then purchase then pen and a goulet nib. I personally bought this pen to use exclusively with Noodler's Baystate Blue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Flex Nib Fountain Pen For $20, the Ahab is a a very good value. It is an oversized pen with an ebonite feed and a fairly high capacity syringe type ink reservoir. The ink flow is good, although it took a while to flow nicely. Washing the components with dish liquid and/or letting ink sit in the pen for a day helps; a little patience helps too. Now it's just fine. The finish on the blue demonstrator I bought was a little dull, but I have no complaints considering the price. The plastic will take a polish, if desired. I would order from the Goulet Pen Company again. My order came inside of a week.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex - Not! I found that this pen does not really flex unless I use way more pressure than I am accustomed to use. It runs very wet. It does not start all the time; in fact, I have found, just as in the video, that I can be writing along and it goes dry. I cleaned it and stuck in the drawer. Writing with a flex pen should be natural, and with this pen you must be very focused on the act of writing, not /what/ you are writing. Were it not for the construction details, it would warrant a zer0. I shouldn't have to toss a brand new pen in the drawer. Watch the video closely, folks.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ink all over the place! Nice looking pen. Nice idea. However, this is a pen for pen nerds. My understanding is that the manufacturer WANTS you to mess with the pen; adjust the nib and ink flow. The thing is, I think you pretty much HAVE to adjust it - and literally get your hands dirty - to make this pen a good writer. Sadly, this ended in catastrophe for me in less than an hour of owning this pen. Ink everywhere! This pen is not for anyone who "just wants a pen that writes." It will be fun for anyone who likes to experiment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy with this Pen! This pen is a tremendous value. I cleaned it thoroughly with hot water and Dawn dish detergent, and it then wrote great out of the box. I haven't had to adjust anything. It holds a lot of ink and it is very nicely designed. No, it's not as nice as my Lamy 2000 or my Parker 51's, but it's a fraction of the cost and I like the design and ink capacity much better than my Lamy Safari's. I expect that I'll be buying several more of these pens. My only suggestion to Noodlers - how about a slide on cap, instead of a screw on cap?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Ahab Flex Nib Piston Fill Fountain Pen - I was delighted to receive my order in less than a week. The packaging was perfect with no damage at all (I was worried about shipping a bottle of ink). I love your products, my new pen works like a charm - it's years since I wrote with a fountain pen... this is one recommended for "shorthand" ... and it does the job well..... I trust that my family will be delighted to receive fountain pens for Christmas, for I fully intend to place more orders..... Thanks Goulet (nice French name). Linda Aston (Montreal, Quebec)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the money If you do not mind getting your fingers inky once in awhile, you should definitely consider this pen. I am using my Ahabs (I have 10 of them) as everyday writers not necessarily for their flex capabilities. Truth be told; not all of them were great right out of the box - about half of them were. The other half took some tinkering but I enjoyed that part as well. The Ahab lies a wet line and this is something I really love. I also like the fact that you can very easily take the pen apart completely and that makes maintenance a breeze. Definitely recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good pen, excelent customer service! I received the fountain pen very quickly after ordering it. Good looking pen, fits nice in my hand. I had difficulty getting the pen to write reliably. After trying a variety of things, to remedy the problem, to no avail, I contacted The Goulet Pen Co. Brian contacted me immediately and quickly replaced the pen with one that works very well. It was the best customer service experience I ever had. Hats off to Brian Goulet and co. I love using my new Noodler's F.P. for writing and sketching and look forward to getting a few more in different colors, that I can load up with different color inks. Noodler's inks and pens rock! Brian's customer service is superb!..........................Thick and thin, lay down the ink. Noodle and Doodle to show what you think!............Happy ink trails......Dave
