Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Cherokee Pearl

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Cherokee Pearl is rated 4.5455 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the price I bought this pen one month ago. So far it has held up nicely from moderate note taking in my classes. Pros: Good flex, good flow, piston converter that holds TONS of ink. Screw cap Cons: It smells unpleasant for some reason, I don't know if its the plastic or the paint, but when I write with it, the smell sometimes even clings to my hands for a while. The clip is kind of cheap, I can see it breaking if you are the type of person to play with it a bunch. Would not recommend this pen if you often clip it to your shirt pocket or what not. For the price, I think this pen is absolutely fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noodler's Arab - Cherokee Pearl I love the Noodler's pens and inks. I cleaned it well before using. It writes like a dream. The flex nib gives me a nice little line variation and some good shading. It's funny, as much as love Noodler's inks, I filled this pen with Diamine Red Dragon. Wonderful match. This is my favorite carry pen when I'm wearing a golf shirt. The clip makes it easy to carry clipped on the v - neck.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My second Ahab A few weeks ago, my Ahba stopped working, so I took it apart for maintenace. It didn't go back together nearly as easily as I could take it aprt, so the pen has lain on my work table since then. I was recently perusing the site, looking for some items on my wishlist. I happened to notice that an Ahab in a color I'd been looking for for quite some time was finally avaialable, so I decided to add one to my order. So now I have a second Noodler's Ahab, and it's better than the first. My oriiginal Ahab, a Zune (dark blue swirl) was always a hard starter and I wasn't able to achieve as much line variation as I was hoping for. Fast forward to my most recent delivery of a Noodler's Ahab in Cherokee Pearl (orange with swirls of black and silver), and this Ahab writes like a dream. The pen body is primarily a vibrant orange, though there is not much chatoyance. The pen shape, construction, design, and build are all similar to every other Ahab in the catalog. I was was able to flex hard, achieving line width variations of 4 and 5 to 1, with no interruption of the flow, no skipping, no railroading, and no hard starts. I used the same ink I used in the other Ahab, Private Reserve Electric DC Blue, and achieved stunning results.I may use my Ahab Zune for experiments or to try and tune the nib or feed as best I can, because the Ahab Cherokee Pearl writes well. I love the Ahab since it entirely user serviceable, can be taken apart and assembled quickly, easily, and unambiguously. It's well designed and well constructed. So long as the body, section and feed remain intact, I have nib options as well as filler mechanism options (piston or eye dropper). I really enjoy the fine/extra fin nib, with the option to go big for effect. The steel nib flex action does take some time to master. It's quite stiff. Overall, I recommend this pen for newbies, intermediates, and the budget conscious. It can be used strictly as a fine nib fountain pen without further incident. Users can be taught how to disassemble and maintain the pen quickly and effectively. And at this price point, users can experiment with different "settings" on the pen to try to acheive the best possible line for their style of writing.. I tested the Ahab Cherokee Pearl on Clairefontaine 90gsm French ruled paper using Noodlers Luxury Blue ink. I wrote several different styles, from italic to Gothic, and uncials, and also used it to doodlge a bit on the page. It's a nice pen to work with, flexes well, and creates lines with subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) shadings and line variation. I'd recommend these pens to anyone seeking an entry level modern flex pen

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice pen I love the fact that I can use either as an eyedropper or with converter. Easy to fill and smooth ink flow. Very happy. I get tons of compliments on the color of the pen.
