Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Amazon Pearl

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Amazon Pearl is rated 4.5556 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ahab Flex I am still working out the kinks with this pen. I love the idea of flex writing and after watching some online reviews decided to give it a try. The online review from Goulet gave me the courage to 'mess with' my pen and it is writing much better. I think with practice it will be great. Although it is taking some fiddling I think that is part of the fun and am very happy with my purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Disappointed -- BUT THEN... Disappointed right out of the box, but then went back to view Brian's writing review again. I saw how much pressure he applied to get the full flex of the nib and there it was! A little bit more pressure and FULL WIDTH nib strokes down to narrow using Private Reserve Sherwood Green ink. From the first inking got over 20 pages of writing, flexing, and drawing. I am just now getting a better feel for fountain pens, the Ahab Flex is only my second pen, but it is a real pleasure to use and write with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Am Now A Noodler's Fan As a newcomer to the fountain pen world, and having watched Brian's reviews and Nathan's video, getting the first Ahab was a treat. It is much easier to fill and clean than the Creaper and Konrad, which were also bought. After taking it apart, it took a little adjusting, but that was part of the fun, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahab Pens Have not inked this one yet as it is one mainly purchased to add to my Ahab collection. I am working on collecting all the different Ahab pens but I am sure that it will write as well as my Mandarin Yellow, Clear Demonstrator and Ahab's Pearl (White) which are my daily carriers and workhorse pens for all occasions and will be inked at some time in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Once you get the feel for it the pen is fabulous! This was my first encounter with a flex nib and a friction fit feed. I have to say that this is a fabulous pen and is a joy to write with. I did replace the flex nib with a Goulet extra fine nib because this is one of my daily writing pens. Aesthetically it shines and sparkles, and the twist cap is something that I really like. I have heard some complaints when it comes to flow with this pen, and I have to say it takes some getting use to. Since this was my first encounter with friction fit feeds I had trouble properly setting the nib and ebonite back in place. After about a week or two I got it to the point where I could take the nib and feed out and put them back in and write straight away. It really is just a matter of getting use to the pen. NOTE: ALWAYS CLEAN THE EBONITE AS SOON AS YOU GET IT! Machining oils could still be left in the feed impairing flow, I just use warm water, soap and an old tooth brush. Great pen. 10 out of 10!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far... Okay The silver ring on the cap promptly broke the day after I got it. So that was a bummer. It is still putting down ink inconstantly, so I plan on giving it a good cleaning and hopefully that will help.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Writes smooth, cheap feel For the price, you cannot beat it. It feeds well, writes smooth, but it has the feel that pens of this material will have. The care taken in shipping was above and beyond my expectations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Adjustable fountain pen Still fiddling with it get ink flow where I would like it. Pretty touchy, but I am pretty picky about it too. :)
